The role of a Kitchen Staff Member at Opaa! is essential in supporting daily operations by preparing breakfast and lunch offerings, assisting with serving lines, and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the kitchen and dining areas. This position requires versatility as the employee may perform tasks in various kitchen roles, including food preparation, cooking, serving, baking, and operating kitchen equipment. The Kitchen Staff Member ensures that all food items meet stringent safety and quality standards by adhering to company recipes, health regulations, and proper handling procedures. Responsibilities encompass setting up and restocking serving lines, monitoring temperatures, inventory management following First In/First Out (FIFO) principles, cleaning kitchen equipment, and maintaining accurate production records. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Up to one-month related experience, training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions
- Ability to write simple correspondence
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved instructions
- Ability to operate kitchen equipment safely with proper certification
- Physical ability to exert over 60 pounds occasionally and move objects up to 25 pounds frequently
- Availability to work in varied conditions including heat, cold, humidity, and loud environments
- Commitment to follow safety and food handling procedures
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training and meetings
- Reliable attendance and timekeeping compliance
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, correspondence, and memos
- Ability to write simple correspondence
- Effective presentation skills in small groups or one-on-one settings
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and interpret bar graphs
- Apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but straightforward written or oral instructions
- Experience working with kitchen equipment such as dishwashers, ovens, mixers, and slicers preferred
- Prior experience in food service or catering is an asset
- Strong organizational and time management skills
Job Duties
- Prepare breakfast and/or lunch offerings
- Assist with the set-up of serving lines daily and ensure food is held at required temperatures
- Operate slicers, mixers, grinders, and other equipment with proper certification
- Keep work areas neat, clean, and organized
- Clean kitchen and cafeteria areas including equipment and dishes
- Keep inventory stock organized and practice FIFO procedures
- Clean, monitor chemical usage, and maintain equipment in the dishwashing area
- Requisition appropriate amounts of food and supplies through the Kitchen Manager
- Prepare bread, cakes, cookies, and other baked goods as required
- Batch cook to maintain quality and presentation
- Serve items with proper sizes and utensils
- Keep serving lines supplied with food items, napkins, silverware, and dishes
- Handle customer monies and operate cash register or computer
- Complete necessary paperwork and meal reconciliation tasks daily
- Submit all hours worked by clocking in and out
- Notify DNS in advance of inability to cover assigned shifts
- Participate in safety incentive program and attend required meetings and trainings
- Follow HACCP processes and safety procedures
- Maintain accurate daily production records
- Report unsafe working conditions
- Other duties as assigned
