Job Description

Sweetgreen is a nationally recognized restaurant brand that has been revolutionizing the fast food industry since its inception in 2007. Known for its commitment to connecting people to fresh, real food, Sweetgreen is dedicated to building healthier communities through sustainable practices and strong relationships with local farmers. The company’s approach to fast food is uniquely fresh, flavorful, and transparent, challenging the traditional norms of the quick-service restaurant sector. Sweetgreen operates a chain of fast-casual dining locations that emphasize seasonal ingredients, eco-conscious sourcing, and detailed attention to food quality and presentation. The culture at Sweetgreen is deeply rooted in empowering its team members to grow professionally within the company while advocating for health, environmental responsibility, and community engagement. As Sweetgreen continues to expand its footprint across the United States, it maintains a focus on inclusivity, equal opportunity employment, and fostering an environment where purpose and food converge.

The Culinary Lead role, known internally as the Kitchen Lead at Sweetgreen, is a pivotal position within the kitchen team where food quality and execution are paramount. Unlike traditional kitchen leadership roles, this position does not involve managing people through scheduling or performance reviews. Instead, the Culinary Lead is the technical expert who owns the standards of food preparation, cooking, and presentation every single shift. This role requires a hands-on leader who exemplifies excellence through craft, coaching, and consistency. Culinary Leads ensure that every food item served meets Sweetgreen’s rigorous standards for flavor, safety, and appearance by overseeing the use of knives, kitchen tools, and ovens—without the use of grills or fryers common in other fast food kitchens.

As the go-to resource for food quality and kitchen execution, the Culinary Lead collaborates closely with Shift Leaders and Managers to maintain operational excellence and uphold food safety and cleanliness standards. The role requires staying ahead of volume demands by managing prep timing and stock levels to keep the kitchen operating smoothly and efficiently. Top-performing Kitchen Leads at Sweetgreen also have a clear career progression path towards higher leadership roles, such as General Manager, typically within 2-3 years. This is an ideal opportunity for individuals who love being in the kitchen, enjoy taking ownership of food quality, and seek leadership responsibility that centers on coaching and improvement rather than direct personnel management.

The position offers competitive wages and potential tips (location and role dependent), along with benefits such as medical, dental, and vision insurance options available to both part-time and full-time team members. Additional perks include paid vacation, wellness leave, parental leave, a free meal every shift, and access to a 401(k) plan. Employees can also participate in the Team Member Merch Shop, where they can earn and purchase custom Sweetgreen gear. The Culinary Lead role is a critical step on the career ladder, providing the necessary experience and leadership skills to advance within Sweetgreen’s dynamic restaurant environment. The company also emphasizes equal opportunity employment and inclusivity, making it a welcoming workplace for diverse talent committed to a healthier future through food.
