Job Description
St. Vincent de Paul - Dayton District Council is a compassionate organization dedicated to improving the lives of people in need throughout the Miami Valley. Rooted in a mission of Christian purpose, the Council focuses on supporting individuals and families facing homelessness, hunger, and hardship by providing essential resources such as shelter, food, and clothing. Their vision centers around accompanying those in need on a one-to-one basis, fostering a caring and respectful community environment. This commitment to service shines every day through the work of dedicated staff, volunteers, and supporters.
The Kitchen Porter position at St. Vincent de Paul plays a vital role in supporting the organization’s mission. This role is essential in maintaining the safety and cleanliness of the kitchen environment, ensuring that food preparation areas are sanitary and ready to support meal service operations. The incumbent will be responsible for washing dishes, sanitizing work surfaces, keeping floors clean, and assisting the cooking staff with food preparation when necessary. This role requires a strong commitment to promoting a culture of hospitality, safety, and respect toward both homeless guests and fellow team members. While primarily focused on maintaining kitchen hygiene, the Kitchen Porter also occasionally serves guests at shelter meal times, embodying the spirit of service and community engagement the organization represents.
Working as a Kitchen Porter requires physical stamina, including the ability to carry up to 50 pounds over short distances. The position may require some travel between multiple shelter locations and flexible availability that includes nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays. This job offers an opportunity to work in a meaningful environment focused on social impact, supporting those experiencing homelessness and vulnerability in the Dayton area. The role fosters growth and learning, and although previous food service experience is preferred, it is not mandatory as training will be provided. The organization values diversity and inclusiveness, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds and walks of life who share a passion for humanitarian service.
