Job Description
Catholic Human Services (CHCS) Senior Centers operate as vital community hubs dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for older adults through engaging programs, nutritious meals, and supportive services. CHCS is an organization rooted in the mission and philosophy of the Archdiocese, emphasizing dignity, respect, and caring for individuals in a compassionate environment. These senior centers provide a welcoming atmosphere where older adults can participate in social activities, receive meal services, and access resources to promote their well-being and independence. The centers not only focus on nourishment but also on fostering social connections and supporting the holistic needs of the senior community. \n\nThe Kitchen Manager/Custodian role is a critical position within the CHCS Senior Centers, specifically designed to manage meal services where food is prepared off-site and delivered to the center. This role requires overseeing the distribution of these prepared meals to center participants in accordance with menus and portion sizes, ensuring that food service is conducted safely and respectfully. This position also has a crucial custodial component, responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and orderliness of the facility both inside and out. The role contributes significantly to creating a safe and sanitary environment, which is essential to the daily operation of the center and the comfort of its participants. \n\nWorking under the supervision of the Senior Center Manager or Satellite Coordinator, the Kitchen Manager/Custodian ensures that food is served following established safety standards and that kitchen and dining areas meet health and hygiene requirements. Responsibilities extend to cleaning kitchen equipment, managing waste disposal, and supporting maintenance tasks that include minor repairs and upkeep of facility security and fire alarm systems. Inventory management of janitorial supplies and coordination of pest control practices are also important elements of this role. \n\nThis position demands a candidate skilled in food service with knowledge of safe food handling practices and ideally holds or can obtain ServSafe certification within six months of employment. The role requires someone who is flexible, hospitable, conscientious of timeliness, and capable of working independently while following directions. Physical demands include the ability to lift and move equipment and supplies up to 50 pounds and the stamina to sit, stand, bend, and move intermittently throughout the workday. \n\nThe Kitchen Manager/Custodian also plays a supportive role in special events by assisting with arrangements like setting up and decorating. Additionally, it requires attendance at staff meetings, training sessions, and participation in activities that ensure continuous quality of service aligned with the organization’s mission. Working with older adults in a respectful manner is crucial, particularly as frequent interruptions and varying daily tasks characterize the work environment. Fluency in English and possibly other languages may be required or preferred for certain centers to effectively communicate with participants and staff. \n\nThis is a non-exempt position within CHCS Senior Centers that combines responsibility for meal service with custodial duties to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment. It offers a meaningful opportunity to positively impact the lives of seniors, support their dignity, and uphold high standards of service and facility care.
