The role of the Kitchen Manager at Uplift Hampton Preparatory is pivotal in leading the Child Nutrition Program (CNP) team at the campus level. This position involves managing day-to-day kitchen operations ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to public health and safety. The Kitchen Manager is responsible for supervising kitchen staff, managing food production, inventory, and maintaining the highest standards of food quality and safety. This is a full-time position with a starting salary of $43,888. The role demands a hands-on approach, overseeing all facets of kitchen operations including staff training, food preparation, equipment maintenance, and financial reconciliations. The successful candidate will create a welcoming cafeteria environment and work closely with school staff and parents to support student nutrition and well-being.
The Kitchen Manager must ensure adherence to Child Nutrition program guidelines by producing accurate work schedules, managing absences, and providing feedback to encourage staff growth. Responsibilities also include ensuring proper storage of food and supplies, maintaining equipment, and reporting injuries promptly. Compliance with state safety and sanitation standards is critical, alongside supervising portion control and food production to meet USDA/TDA meal patterns. Another key aspect is inventory management, including ordering supplies and reconciling food production data using Titan Menu Daily software.
This role requires proficient communication skills to interact effectively with various personnel, students, and parents. The Kitchen Manager must foster a positive atmosphere in the cafeteria and support participation by presenting menus attractively. Additionally, the role involves collaboration with Operations Directors to coordinate meals for special events such as field trips and testing. Beyond managerial duties, the Kitchen Manager will assist with cooking, cleaning, and other kitchen tasks as needed. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or general education diploma (GED)
- 2 plus years experience in school food service or any food service including cooking, production, inventory with 1 plus in supervisory role
- Must possess current SERV safe Kitchen Manager’s Certification before employment or ability to obtain within first 30 days of hire
- Ability to understand food preparation and safety instructions
- Knowledge of kitchen equipment and food production procedures
- Capable of operating small and large kitchen equipment and tools
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to communicate with all levels of personnel, students, and parents
- Ability to motivate, delegate, and lead a team to accomplish goals
- Ability to read, analyze, and apply understand and carry out instructions in written or oral English
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook) and use software as necessary (POS, clock in and out etc.)
- Ability to use basic office equipment
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations and basic finance understanding
- Required to stand and walk for entire shift
- Required to reach, balance, stoop, kneel, twist and bend often
- Employees must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds
- Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts
- Occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold and extreme heat
- Criminal records check pre-hire and annually thereafter if applicable
- Must be eligible to work in the United States and provide work authorization
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education diploma (GED)
- 2 plus years experience in school food service or any food service including cooking, production, and inventory
- At least 1 year in supervisory role

Job Duties
- Oversee day-to-day operations within the kitchen adhering to Child Nutrition program guidelines
- Supervise, manage, and cross train kitchen staff
- Produce work schedules and manage employee absences
- Provide formal, timely, and appropriate feedback on individual work performance and growth opportunities
- Ensure storage of all food and supplies in the kitchen
- Ensure adherence to State Safety and Sanitation guidelines
- Monitor working condition of appropriate kitchen equipment
- Report work-related injuries to Risk Management in a timely manner
- Document required monthly safety training with the kitchen staff
- Ensure that staff adhere to all standardized recipes on a continual basis
- Ensure high standard of food quality through continual monitoring of staff during production and service
- Ensure all methods of counting and claiming are compliant and accurate
- Create a welcoming and friendly environment in cafeteria, kitchen, and at each point of service
- Follow best practices for presenting menus and promoting participation
- Manage production, order, and inventory
- Responsible for data entry of planned production and actual amount served in Titan Menu Daily
- Report recipe/menu errors to Director of Menus
- Plan food production in System based on completed production records
- Monitor portion control to ensure compliance with USDA/TDA meal patterns
- Monitor level of inventory needed for production for central and vended kitchen adhering to inventory management process
- Monitor weekly and physical inventory and maintain perpetual inventory
- Monitor inventory records in Titan Perpetual Inventory System
- Accountable for placing accurate order for production
- Responsible for gas credit card reconciliations documentation submitted in a timely manner
- Monitor food production and waste
- Perform End of Day reconciliation with each cashier including daily cash drawer reconciliation, daily a la carte sales and inventory reconciliation
- Adhere to standard accounting operating processes for cash handling
- Oversee student/staff lunch account balances
- Work with Operations Directors to coordinate meals for field trips and testing
- Attend required trainings
- Assist with other kitchen tasks as needed including delivering and/or transporting to secondary serving location, cooking, cleaning, servings
- Establish and maintain positive relationship and continual open line of communication with all Uplift staff and parents
- Other duties as assigned by FOM/Director
