Job Description

The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury operates a detention center dedicated to providing safe and secure care for juveniles under its supervision. As part of its commitment to the community and to youth rehabilitation, the center prioritizes maintaining high standards in all aspects of its operation, including food services. This facility employs knowledgeable food service workers who are vital to ensuring that juveniles receive nutritious, safely prepared meals in a sanitary environment. The detention center also emphasizes adherence to legal and policy guidelines to guarantee that all operations align with federal, state, and local regulations, fostering a professional and respectful environment for both staff and detainees.

The role of Food Service Worker II at this detention center is a key position in the Food Service series, ranked as the intermediate level between entry and senior roles. Incumbents in this position are responsible for preparing meals according to established menus designed to meet the dietary needs of juveniles in detention. The job requires a careful balance of culinary skills and adherence to safety and sanitation standards, including washing, chopping, measuring, and mixing ingredients, as well as ensuring foods are kept at proper temperatures to maintain quality and prevent foodborne illness.

In addition to food preparation, employees in this role maintain strict cleanliness in kitchen and serving areas. They are responsible for cleaning equipment, counters, sinks, floors, and storage areas to support a hygienic cooking environment. They also manage inventory and keep accurate records related to food prepared and served, including maintaining log books for federally funded programs like the school lunch program. On top of these culinary and sanitation duties, they assist the Kitchen Manager in inventory control and ordering supplies, particularly for U.S.D.A donated foods, ensuring transparency and compliance with program requirements.

Supervisory duties are also part of the Food Service Worker II position as they sometimes oversee other cooks, providing training, assigning and directing work to help maintain consistent meal quality and kitchen standards. This responsibility requires good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with team members and administration.

Working at the Calcasieu Parish detention center means following policies that protect the confidentiality of juveniles and comply with the Drug-Free Workplace Policy and Equal Employment Opportunity Act. This role is physically demanding and requires the ability to perform tasks that involve standing for extended periods, lifting heavy items up to 50 pounds, and working under conditions that may involve exposure to heat, chemicals, and mechanical parts. Despite the challenging environment, this role offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to youth services and public safety through ensuring the well-being of detained juveniles through proper nutrition and food service management.

The Food Service Worker II position requires at least a high school diploma or GED and some related experience or training, with a preference for candidates familiar with the Louisiana Department of Education Food and Nutrition Services. A valid driver's license is also required to comply with state regulations. The role is essential in supporting the operational needs of the detention center, providing the dietary foundation for effective rehabilitation and care efforts. Employees in this role are integral members of the detention center team, carrying out their duties with professionalism and compassion towards the juveniles served.
