Job Description

Federal Way School District is a comprehensive public school district dedicated to providing quality education and student services to its diverse community. With a commitment to fostering academic excellence and promoting a supportive learning environment, the district offers various programs and initiatives to ensure all students have the opportunities they need to succeed. One key aspect of the district’s holistic approach is the Nutrition Services Department, which delivers meal services to schools throughout the district. This department plays a crucial role in supporting students’ health and well-being through nutritious and appealing meal options, following strict safety and regulatory standards.

The Secondary Kitchen Manager position within the Nutrition Services Department is central to the operation and positive promotion of meal services at secondary schools. This role involves overseeing meal production, ensuring meals are prepared and served in a safe, sanitary, and attractive manner, and leading kitchen staff effectively. The position requires a hands-on approach, as the manager will assign and supervise tasks for the school kitchen assistants and student helpers, ensuring all meal service activities meet the district’s high-quality standards. The Secondary Kitchen Manager collaborates closely with school personnel, including principals and building representatives, to align meal service schedules and promotions with school activities and student needs.

This role demands strong organizational and leadership abilities, as well as a deep understanding of food safety guidelines, particularly those related to the National School Lunch Program. The manager is responsible for operating meal service equipment, managing point of sale systems, and maintaining accurate meal and cash reporting to the district’s Central Kitchen. Additionally, the role involves promoting meal services through advertising and engaging food displays to encourage student participation. The manager ensures kitchen equipment is well-maintained and that cleanliness and safety standards are rigorously upheld.

Employees in this role must be able to work within a dynamic environment that includes varied meal schedules and the physical demands of kitchen work, such as lifting and maneuvering heavy carts and supplies. They must also be prepared to interact professionally with a wide range of people, including students, staff, and other district employees, while upholding confidentiality and ethical standards.

The position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Nutrition Services and is represented by the Public School Employees Union (PSE) SEIU Local 1948. Classified as Level C on the PSE Salary Schedule, the role offers prorated benefits including medical, dental, vision, sick and vacation leave, life insurance, and retirement benefits based on full-time equivalency. This position is integral to ensuring students receive quality meals that support their academic and health needs, reinforcing Federal Way School District’s dedication to nurturing each scholar’s voice, dream, and bright future.
