Job Description

The Salvation Army is a globally recognized faith-based organization with more than 130 years of service, known for its commitment to helping people in need across Canadian and Bermudian communities. Rooted in its Christian values, The Salvation Army annually assists over 2 million individuals, providing critical support such as food, clothing, shelter, and resources for those facing unemployment, addiction, and family difficulties. As a dynamic and innovative organization, it continues adapting to meet evolving social needs, all while embodying its core mission, vision, and values centered on hope, service, dignity, and stewardship. The Salvation Army prides itself on fostering inclusion and belonging by welcoming people from diverse backgrounds into its workforce and services.

The role of the Assistant Cook/Kitchen Helper within The Salvation Army is a vital support position focused on assisting the Cook in food preparation to ensure timely and nutritious meals for those served by the organization. This position involves preparation of general and dietary-specific meals under the direction of the Cook, maintaining cleanliness and organization within the kitchen, and occasionally handling supply orders. The Assistant Cook/Kitchen Helper contributes to efficient food service operations by following established work practices and policies, including those concerning the handling and use of donated foods. They are also entrusted with basic record-keeping and reporting duties to maintain operational standards. Working often within a ministry unit or social services facility kitchen environment, this role requires adaptability to busy and occasionally challenging settings, including hot and noisy conditions, occasional verbal abuse, and pressure to meet timelines. This job demands physical stamina with frequent standing, lifting (including loads over 50 pounds), cutting, chopping, and walking. It also involves following strict safety protocols to minimize hazards related to sharp objects, burns, slips, and exposure to chemicals or infectious materials. The Assistant Cook/Kitchen Helper may occasionally take on leadership responsibilities during the absence of senior kitchen staff, organizing food service workflows and guiding meal attendants. They must be willing to work varied shifts, including early mornings, weekends, and travel up to 30 percent of the time as required. This position is an excellent opportunity for those seeking to contribute meaningfully to community welfare while developing culinary and kitchen management skills in a supportive and mission-driven environment. The targeted salary range for this role is $16.52 per hour.

The Salvation Army prioritizes employee well-being and safety by providing necessary training such as WHMIS, First Aid/CPR certification, non-violent crisis intervention, and robust health and safety protocols. Reasonable accommodations are offered to ensure all employees can perform their roles effectively. Individuals joining this role will be part of a historically significant organization committed to transforming lives through compassionate service and practical support, aligning their work with enduring values and community impact. This position not only supports immediate food needs but also sustains The Salvation Army’s broader mission to share love and hope in the community through tangible acts of kindness and care.
