As part of the district's commitment to fostering a healthy and productive learning environment, the Nutrition and Food Service Department operates with strict adherence to federal, state, and district guidelines ensuring safety and nutrition excellence. With a focus on outstanding customer service, the department aims to support educational success by offering meals that meet high-quality standards and comply with established safety protocols.

The Nutrition and Food Service Assistant role within KISD is a vital position responsible for preparing and serving safe, nutritious, and high-quality meals to elementary and secondary school students, staff, and other patrons. This non-exempt position falls under the pay grade FS01 and involves working duty days ranging between up to 176 days for elementary schools and 174 days for secondary schools, with duty hours between 3 to 7.5 hours per day. The role reports directly to the Nutrition and Food Service Manager and/or Assistant Manager and embodies a hands-on approach to meal preparation, food safety, customer service, and general kitchen operations.

In this role, the assistant will prepare food according to planned menus and standardized recipes, ensuring consistent quality and adherence to nutritional guidelines. They will serve food at scheduled meal times, follow all departmental policies and procedures, and maintain compliance with federal and state regulations. The position requires flexibility to work various shifts at multiple locations and occasionally assist with catering requests and deliveries throughout the district. Additionally, employees will use various kitchen equipment, including electric slicers, mixers, pressure steamers, fryers, ovens, dishwashers, and point of sale computers.

The job requires physical stamina as it involves continual standing, walking, pushing, pulling, moderate lifting of up to 40 pounds, and frequent stooping, bending, and kneeling. The working environment includes exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures typical of a kitchen setting. In carrying out responsibilities, employees must demonstrate attention to detail, emotional stability, teamwork, and a willingness to learn through in-service training and workshops.

Continuous compliance with HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) and SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) guidelines is mandatory to ensure food safety standards. Employees are expected to maintain a professional appearance and hygiene, report unsafe conditions and accidents promptly, and contribute positively to the work environment. This role is suited for individuals who thrive in fast-paced environments and enjoy working collaboratively to achieve meal service excellence throughout the district.
