The Child Nutrition Office of Independent School District 197 (ISD 197) is inviting applications for the position of Cashier/Kitchen Assistant for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year. ISD 197 is a well-established public school district committed to providing high-quality educational and nutritional services to students across multiple school facilities. This position is essential in supporting the nutritional needs of students, contributing directly to their health and well-being during the school day. Its unique nature requires flexibility as the work location varies across all schools in District 197 that offer meal services, reflecting the dynamic environment of school nutrition programs.
This role is designed for individuals passionate about child nutrition and dedicated to providing excellent customer service within a cafeteria setting. The Cashier/Kitchen Assistant will work on all student contact days throughout the school year, indicating a stable, continuous employment opportunity. Employees are expected to start their shifts between 9:15 AM and 10:45 AM and complete their work between 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM, averaging approximately 3.75 hours per day. The position offers competitive pay based on the 2024-2025 salary schedule negotiated between ISD 197 and SEIU Local 284. Pay rates range from $18.48 to $21.19 per hour when assigned to elementary or parochial schools, and from $18.68 to $21.39 per hour when assigned to middle or high schools, recognizing the differences in operational needs across educational levels.
The Cashier/Kitchen Assistant plays a key role in the daily operations of school meal service. Responsibilities include assisting with forecasting daily meal requirements to minimize waste and meet student demand efficiently. They ensure the preparation and serving of meals for students, staff, and special events aligns with established nutritional guidelines and quality standards. A significant component of the role involves proficiently operating the Point of Sale system, managing cash transactions, and preparing bank deposits accurately. This position supports the compliance with USDA meal reimbursement regulations, ensuring that all meals sold qualify for federal nutritional assistance programs.
Beyond technical tasks, this role demands a commitment to maintaining a clean and sanitary kitchen and serving environment, adhering to health and safety standards. - Assist in forecasting daily meal needs and communicates accordingly with person in charge
- Assist with preparing and serving meals for students, staff and special functions
- Effectively operates the Point of Sale system, handles money, and prepares bank deposits

- Performs a variety of kitchen cleaning duties
