Job Description
This employment opportunity is offered by a reputable secondary school within a public school district, which is committed to providing an exceptional food service experience to its students, staff, and faculty. The district operates under strict guidelines ensuring nutritional, safety, and regulatory standards are met in all school meals, backed by a strong team of food service professionals dedicated to fostering a healthy and enjoyable dining environment within the school cafeteria. The district values teamwork, compliance with health and safety protocols, and the continuous professional development of its food service staff to meet and exceed district policies and community expectations.
The position available is for an Assistant Food Service Manager, a vital role that supports the Food Service Manager in overseeing daily operations within the school kitchen and cafeteria. This is a full-time position with an FTE of 0.875, corresponding to 7 hours per day, with a competitive hourly wage of $17.05. The calendar for this role spans 179 student and staff non-attendance days, aligning with the academic year schedule. The Assistant Manager's core responsibilities include assisting with food preparation, supervising food service personnel, managing cashiering activities, and maintaining accurate financial records for daily cash transactions and bank deposits. This role demands someone skilled in multitasking within a fast-paced kitchen environment, able to apply health and safety guidelines rigorously while ensuring the smooth running of meal services.
The Assistant Food Service Manager is expected to adhere to district policies regarding dietary programs such as free and reduced meal programs, ensuring compliance with associated funding regulations. This position requires basic supervisory skills, including training and mentoring food service technicians and other kitchen staff, facilitating orientations, and assisting with performance evaluations. The role involves proactive inventory management, food ordering, and receiving supplies, all while maintaining sanitation standards to promote a safe and healthy kitchen workspace.
Knowledge of operating standard and specialized kitchen equipment is essential, as is proficiency in cashiering duties including handling and balancing cash, preparing bank deposits, and maintaining detailed records. The position also requires familiarity with office computer operations and job-specific software for record keeping and communication purposes. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills, both written and oral, and be capable of performing mathematical functions necessary for daily financial reconciliation and inventory control.
Physical demands include the ability to stand for extended periods, lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds, and work effectively in a kitchen environment. Employees must also possess clarity of speech and hearing for effective communication and sufficient manual dexterity to operate various kitchen tools and equipment safely.
This position is under the supervision of the Food Service Manager and includes mandatory participation in approved training and workshops to stay current with best practices and regulatory updates. Employment is "at will," meaning either the employee or the district can terminate employment at any time with or without cause or notice. The district upholds an inclusive employment policy, offering advantages in public employment to eligible veterans as per Idaho state code regulations. Regular attendance is critical, and a yearly evaluation process by the kitchen manager is in place to support ongoing performance and professional growth.
In conclusion, this Assistant Food Service Manager role is ideal for individuals passionate about food service in educational settings, with a commitment to quality, safety, and team leadership within a structured district food service program. The position offers competitive pay, an engaging work environment, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on student nutrition and well-being in the school community. Candidates interested should possess a high school diploma or GED, current Serve Safe Certification, and relevant experience combining food preparation, cashiering, and supervisory skills.
