Job Description
Gospel Rescue Mission is a well-established 501(c)(3) not-for-profit religious organization dedicated to providing comprehensive social service programs to the homeless and working poor. Rooted deeply in Christian faith, the organization ensures all its ministry actions honor the name of Jesus Christ and are centered on the will of God. Known for its commitment to compassionate service and community involvement, Gospel Rescue Mission plays a vital role in supporting vulnerable populations by addressing their immediate needs and promoting dignity, respect, and hope. The organization operates various programs including housing, food services, recovery programs, and social support, which collectively contribute to transformative change in the lives of those served. As a faith-aligned entity, Gospel Rescue Mission maintains high standards of integrity, accountability, and compassion in all its operations, fostering an environment where staff and volunteers grow personally and professionally while making a meaningful impact in their community.
The Kitchen Assistant Manager role at Gospel Rescue Mission is a critical leadership position responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the kitchen and dining services, which serve thousands of meals to men, women, and children every day. This full-time, exempt position works 40 hours per week with a starting hourly wage of $18.50, offering paid time off and a comprehensive benefits package. Reporting directly to the Kitchen Manager, the Kitchen Assistant Manager leads a team of five full-time employees, including the Dining Room Lead, Dining Room Facilitators, and Kitchen Porters, ensuring seamless service delivery from early morning through evening hours. The kitchen operates from 5 AM to 7 PM, and dining areas are open from 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM, seven days a week, reflecting the continuous commitment to meet community needs.
In this role, the Kitchen Assistant Manager is responsible for managing inventory levels, receiving and stocking daily food donations, and ordering all kitchen, food, and dining supplies. The position requires extensive collaboration with the Kitchen Manager to maintain standards of excellence, monitor budgets, and develop menu plans that optimize food quality and cost efficiency. The manager also ensures compliance with health department regulations, supervises food safety protocols, monitors sanitation practices, and maintains kitchen cleanliness and equipment functionality to the highest standards.
Key responsibilities include overseeing meal preparation for an average of 450 individuals per day, managing special food needs for events and banquets with up to 2,500 meals, and facilitating coordination with vendors and community partners for efficient food distribution and purchasing. The manager must skillfully balance operational demands with compassion, maintaining an environment of love, grace, dignity, and respect for all guests, volunteers, and staff.
Essential skills for the Kitchen Assistant Manager include exceptional food preparation capabilities, knowledge of culinary trends, supervisory experience, inventory control expertise, and effective communication skills. The position emphasizes teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership, requiring the ability to handle emotional stress given the vulnerable population served. Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency is a preferred asset to enhance community engagement. The role demands physical stamina to perform tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds, frequent walking, standing, and moving within the facility.
Gospel Rescue Mission supports professional development through ongoing training, goal setting aligned with organizational benchmarks, and participation in staff meetings. The organization also promotes employee self-care to mitigate compassion fatigue and emotional stress inherent to the social service environment. Adherence to safety standards, personal integrity, and accountability are essential attributes for success in this role.
To join Gospel Rescue Mission means becoming part of a dedicated team committed to serving those in crisis while upholding faith and excellence in all aspects of ministry and service delivery. The Kitchen Assistant Manager position offers a unique opportunity to blend culinary expertise with leadership and compassion to make a tangible difference in the lives of thousands each day.
