Job Description
The Phoenix Union High School District (PXU) is a prominent educational institution situated in Arizona's capital city, serving a diverse student population of approximately 24,000 students and employing around 3,400 staff members. The role being offered is for a Kitchen Assistant within the Food Services Department. This position is categorized under the Education Support Professional salary schedule and is a Grade 1 role with a 10-month work year. The location for this position is assigned to a school within the district. The starting hourly wage ranges from $16.41 to $17.16, depending on the candidate’s previous relevant experience and education qualifications.
The Kitchen Assistant plays an essential role in the preparation and servicing of meals for both students and faculty members. This position requires performing a wide variety of kitchen duties, including the preparation of food and supplies for breakfast and lunch services, assisting with cooking menu items, and maintaining food safety protocols by recording food, refrigerator, and freezer temperatures. The assistant is also responsible for setting up and breaking down student and faculty cafeterias, ensuring that all eating utensils and supplies are available and that food serving lines are ready for use.
Additional responsibilities include organizing steam tables, collecting and storing leftover food, taking inventory of supplies, and informing the School Cafeteria Site Supervisor of any necessary items. The Kitchen Assistant will also accept food deliveries, date items for proper storage, assist in cash register operations by handling money from students and staff, and count money for end-of-day deposits. Cleaning and sanitizing both the dining and kitchen areas is also a part of this role, supporting overall kitchen hygiene and safety.
This position may assist part-time Cafeteria Workers when needed and contribute to menu planning and ordering. The role demands adherence to Governing Board policies, confidentiality of work-related issues, and a commitment to professional and courteous interactions with students, parents, visitors, and school staff. This position requires collaboration within a team environment, adherence to food safety standards, and a proactive approach to maintaining a safe and efficient kitchen operation.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Some previous commercial kitchen or food industry experience preferred
- Valid Maricopa County Food Handler's Card at the time of hire
- Ability to obtain ServSafe Manager's Certificate within 90 days of employment
- Possess or obtain Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card within first 90 workdays
- Ability to lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds
- Willingness to work in a commercial kitchen environment exposed to hot and cold temperatures, potentially dangerous equipment, and hazardous chemicals
Job Qualifications

Job Duties
- Prepares food and supplies for breakfast and lunch services
