Job Description
The Equity Project (TEP) Charter School is a distinguished educational institution located in New York City, recognized nationwide for its innovative approach to education and remarkable student outcomes. It has been featured in prominent publications such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, as well as on the television program 60 Minutes, highlighting its revolutionary model of teacher compensation and commitment to educational equity. TEP is dedicated to transforming the lives of under-served students by providing a rigorous, supportive, and inspiring learning environment that prepares them for success in high school, college, and beyond. This mission-driven charter school focuses on serving students from Washington Heights and Inwood, neighborhoods with vibrant communities where academic opportunity is crucial.
TEP is expanding its facilities and operations with the opening of a brand-new Middle School campus, a state-of-the-art 60,000 square foot building that will serve approximately 480 students in grades 5 through 8. This modern campus is designed to offer an engaging and safe learning environment, complete with advanced amenities to support comprehensive education and student wellness.
Within this dynamic and growing institution, the Kitchen Assistant role serves as an integral part of TEP’s full-service culinary team. The Kitchen Assistant supports the school’s mission by helping to deliver nutritious, appealing, and culturally relevant meals to a diverse student body. This role is specifically centered in the newly constructed Middle School campus kitchen, where the team prepares and distributes breakfast, lunch, and snacks not only for Middle School students but also for 600 Early Childhood and Elementary students across three campus locations. The Kitchen Assistant is responsible for preparing food, packing meals efficiently and safely, and maintaining hygienic kitchen conditions according to established food program policies.
This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals who are passionate about contributing to educational equity through promoting health and wellness among children. The role involves a variety of tasks including food preparation, ensuring allergen-free meals are properly handled, and assisting with daily meal service logistics. The Kitchen Assistant works closely with TEP’s Executive Chef and Director of Food Services, gaining valuable mentorship and guidance in a supportive work environment.
TEP provides competitive compensation, offering an hourly wage of $18 with weekly shifts ranging from 35 to 40 hours during daytime hours. Alongside fair pay, employees benefit from generous paid time off including three weeks of vacation and 11 federal holidays. Additional benefits include comprehensive healthcare coverage (medical, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability, and life insurance), a 403b retirement plan, parental leave, and dependent care accounts. The school fosters ongoing professional development through tuition reimbursement and other educational opportunities, emphasizing a culture of continuous growth.
By joining The Equity Project as a Kitchen Assistant, candidates become part of a passionate and dedicated team committed to reshaping public education and creating equitable opportunities for all students. This role offers a fulfilling career path where employees can directly impact the health and well-being of students while developing valuable skills in a mission-focused organization.
