Job Description
Hillel at the University of Vermont is a vibrant and mission-driven organization dedicated to enriching the lives of Jewish students through community engagement, traditions, education, and social support. Located within the Burack Hillel Center inside the 439 College Street Residence Hall, just steps away from the picturesque University of Vermont campus green, the center serves as a welcoming hub for students to gather, learn, celebrate, and relax. The facility includes office spaces for staff, a kosher kitchen, and versatile open areas equipped to host a variety of programs, religious services, meals, and quiet study sessions. Hillel at UVM is part of Hillel International, the largest Jewish campus organization worldwide, which supports nearly 1,000 colleges and universities. The organization is committed to fostering a sense of belonging and nurturing Jewish identity and leadership among students through meaningful experiences centered around Jewish life, Israel engagement, holidays, and Shabbat.
The Kitchen and Facility Manager role at Hillel UVM is a vital part-time, hourly position designed to support Jewish student life by managing meal preparation, kitchen operations, and the upkeep of shared spaces within the Burack Hillel Center. This role plays a pivotal part in creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere by ensuring students receive nourishment and hospitality during Shabbat dinners, holiday meals, brunches, student programs, and special events. With a specialized focus on maintaining Hillel's kosher kitchen standards, the manager will be responsible for preparing and serving meals that meet diverse dietary requirements including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and allergy-sensitive options. The position requires excellent organizational skills, a strong commitment to food safety, and the ability to multitask in a busy campus environment.
In addition to culinary duties, the Kitchen and Facility Manager will oversee the cleanliness, organization, and readiness of Hillel's common areas, including dining rooms, lounges, study spaces, meeting rooms, and storage closets. This includes setting up and resetting rooms for various gatherings, moving furniture as needed, and liaising with university facilities and vendors to address maintenance and supply needs. This hands-on role emphasizes teamwork, collaboration with student volunteers and interns, and a welcoming spirit to help foster a sense of community and Jewish tradition through hospitality. The position offers a competitive hourly pay range of $25 to $30, commensurate with experience, averaging 20 to 25 hours weekly primarily during the academic year, with expected availability for Friday Shabbat preparations and select evenings, weekends, and holidays.
