Job Description

The City of Hillsboro, located in Oregon, is renowned for its commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community atmosphere. One of its key community hubs is the Hillsboro Community Senior Center, a cherished establishment where people come together to socialize, stay active, and engage in programs that promote healthy aging. The Senior Center is a place of warmth and connection, serving as a vital resource for the diverse and dynamic senior population in the area. The Center's kitchen team plays a crucial role in this environment, preparing and serving nutritious and delicious meals that contribute significantly to the overall experience of visitors. This role is embedded within the Parks & Recreation Department, which is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents by offering recreational, educational, and social opportunities through various programs and facilities.

Currently, the Hillsboro Community Senior Center is looking to hire for two Kitchen Aide positions: one part-time, approximately 25 hours per week with a consistent schedule, and one on-call position with hours that vary depending on operational demands. These roles provide an excellent opportunity to support the community by contributing to daily meal services and special events, helping to create a welcoming environment that encourages interaction and social engagement among participants. The position is ideal for individuals who enjoy teamwork, have a passion for customer service, and seek to gain valuable experience in a commercial kitchen setting.

As a Kitchen Aide, you will work closely with the Chef, Assistant Chef, and other kitchen staff members. Your key responsibilities will include assisting with meal preparation, serving food, maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen and dining areas, and supporting special event catering. You will help prepare salads, side dishes, desserts, and manage the salad bar. In addition, the role involves washing dishes and kitchen equipment, refilling condiments and dining supplies, and assisting with waste disposal and recycling efforts. This entry-level role emphasizes safety, teamwork, and customer service, providing a supportive environment to learn the intricacies of food service operations in a community-oriented setting.

The work is predominantly indoors in a commercial kitchen environment and requires physical activities such as standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 pounds occasionally), carrying, bending, and other repetitive motions. Kitchen aides are expected to interact respectfully and politely with Senior Center patrons, ensuring a positive dining experience. The schedule for the part-time position is mainly Monday through Friday, typically from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., but some variation may occur based on the Center’s needs. On-call staff positions offer flexibility but require availability based on operational demand.

Joining the City of Hillsboro means becoming part of a team that highly values innovation, inclusion, and collaboration. Employees benefit from a culture that encourages professional growth, supports a healthy work-life balance, and emphasizes meaningful community service. The City offers a competitive salary with contributions to PERS retirement, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, paid time off, life and disability insurance, and additional perks such as bilingual incentive pay, wellness reimbursements, and recreation access. This position not only offers a chance to serve the community but also to advance your career with ongoing professional development opportunities.

If you are seeking a rewarding role where you can engage with seniors, contribute to a positive community environment, and develop your food service skills, the Kitchen Aide position at Hillsboro Community Senior Center could be an excellent fit. The City of Hillsboro is also committed to equity and inclusion, encouraging applications from diverse backgrounds to reflect the population it serves and to foster a welcoming workplace where every employee’s voice is valued.
