Job Description

The Salvation Army is an international charitable organization and church known for its commitment to serving disadvantaged populations, including the homeless and those struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues. With a mission focused on providing essential services, support, and community outreach, The Salvation Army operates numerous shelters and assistance programs aimed at improving the lives of individuals and families in need. The organization emphasizes its religious mission and values, which are integral to its operations and the behaviors expected of its employees. This position is based within one of the organization’s shelter kitchens, where compassionate care and practical support meet to offer nourishment and a welcoming space for vulnerable community members.

The Kitchen Aide role at The Salvation Army is a crucial part of the shelter's daily operations. Under the supervision of the Kitchen Supervisor, the Kitchen Aide assists in food preparation, serving, and cleanup to support the delivery of three meals daily to shelter guests. This position requires a hands-on approach to kitchen duties, including food storage, meal reporting for billing and statistics, and inventory management. The Kitchen Aide also contributes to maintaining kitchen hygiene standards and supports the coordination of kitchen volunteers and collaboration with other kitchen staff to ensure smooth service. Employees in this role help create a safe, efficient, and supportive environment that meets the nutritional needs of a diverse population, often comprised of individuals facing significant hardships.

This role requires sensitivity and a readiness to engage with a disadvantaged population, as well as the ability to manage multiple responsibilities efficiently. The Kitchen Aide must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and operate relevant kitchen and office equipment. While having experience with the nutritional needs of homeless populations and informal mental health or substance abuse evaluation training is preferred, employees will receive support and training to meet these requirements. Employees must also obtain a ServSafe food handling certificate within the first 30 days of employment, with company assistance provided for this certification.

Working at The Salvation Army means becoming part of a team rooted in faith and committed to the organization's religious purpose. The nature of employment is at-will, allowing either the employee or the employer to terminate the relationship at any time with or without cause. The organization is an equal opportunity employer committed to providing a respectful and accommodating workplace for all qualified individuals. Those hired will be expected to uphold the mission and values of The Salvation Army in both their work and conduct.
