JUVENILE DETENTION OFFICER- Oklahoma County Juvenile Justice Center

The Oklahoma County Juvenile Detention Center (OCJDC) plays a vital role in the community by providing a secure, safe, and structured environment for youth who are in the juvenile justice system. OCJDC is currently seeking dedicated Detention Officers/Corporals responsible for the care, safety, security, and supervision of residents within the facility and during transports outside the center. This full-time, in-person position offers an annual salary range from $43,200 to $44,400 and requires a commitment to upholding the facility's high standards while working in a challenging and dynamic environment.

The Detention Officer/Corporal role is essential in ensuring the well-being and safety of juveniles entrusted to the facility’s care. As a Detention Officer, you will be expected to adhere closely to the OCJDC mission and vision while practicing trauma-informed care strategies based on TBRI principles. This means actively contributing to creating an empowering atmosphere that facilitates growth and safety for residents. You will use intentional communication techniques including words, body language, tone, and mannerisms to build trust and meaningful relationships with youth in your care. Maintaining compliance with work schedules and staffing ratios is paramount, and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively through various tools, including handheld radios, is essential.

Your daily activities will include performing routine counts and observations, supervising residents during various scheduled operations such as meals, education, recreational activities, emergency drills, and providing assistance with personal hygiene routines. You will be responsible for maintaining order during all activities and promptly addressing behavioral issues with respect and professionalism. Inspections for contraband and searches will be conducted as part of your duties to maintain a secure environment.

The role requires a capacity to quickly and effectively respond to emergencies and physical incidents within the facility while ensuring that all residents’ physical, medical, and emotional needs are met or reported appropriately. Additionally, you will be tasked with preparing and submitting accurate written or typed reports related to incidents and resident behavior.

Physically, this position involves active engagement, requiring frequent walking, standing, occasional running, climbing stairs, and the ability to push, pull, or lift weights up to 50 pounds. The work environment may be loud and can range from calm to tense or hostile at times, requiring resilience and a calm demeanor under pressure. The position requires flexibility to work various shifts and the ability to work extended hours when necessary.

The role also involves utilizing various tools such as Microsoft Office programs, communication devices, correctional equipment like handcuffs and security keys.
