The opportunity for a Junior Environmental Scientist at Onterris is an entry-level to early-career position designed for individuals passionate about environmental science and public health. This role is integral to the emergency response team, charged with conducting environmental sampling and data collection during environmental incidents and investigations. The Junior Environmental Scientist performs research and analysis to identify, reduce, or eliminate pollutants and health hazards, applying scientific principles to interpret data from air, water, soil, and other environmental samples. This role requires strong methodical skills and attention to detail, with responsibilities extending to risk assessments and industrial hygiene applications to fulfill client needs.
Junior Environmental Scientists at Onterris are expected to maintain emergency response readiness by keeping calibrated equipment and personal protective gear at hand. The role involves frequent travel, often on short notice, to respond to emergency situations not limited to the primary office location. Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
- 1 to 3 years of experience in a related field
- Immediate availability for extended travel and emergency response
- Completion of 40-hour HAZWOPER training within three weeks of hire
- Possession of DISA and TWIC clearances within three months
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions
- Strong communication in English
- Ability to work independently
- Current driver's license
- Ability to obtain passport
- Ability to comply with safety requirements including respirator use
- Willingness to work overtime and weekends
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform outdoor fieldwork
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment for extended periods
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in biology, environmental engineering, environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene, chemistry, chemical engineering, toxicology or related science
- One to three years of related field experience may substitute for degree
- Advanced computer skills on Windows platform
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to learn various software and complete administrative duties such as timesheets and expense reports
- Ability to obtain HAZWOPER certification
- Ability to obtain and maintain DISA and TWIC clearances
- Current driver's license
- Ability to obtain a passport
- Completion of job-specific OSHA training
- Ability to comply with OSHA requirements including respirator use
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
- Capable of working overtime and weekends
Job Duties
- Participate as a member of an emergency response team to conduct environmental sampling and data collection
- Conduct research or perform investigations to identify, abate or eliminate sources of pollutants or hazards
- Utilize scientific methodology for risk assessments and industrial hygiene applications
- Maintain, calibrate and mobilize equipment appropriate for emergency response
- Compile, review and summarize scientific and technical data and literature
- Complete designated safety and HAZWOPER training per regulatory requirements
- Respond to emergency calls and undertake extended travel as needed
