The Junior Sommelier role at Four Seasons Napa Valley is an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about wine, guest service, and wine education. This position entails creating and managing wine lists, ordering and maintaining wine inventory, and offering expert wine pairing suggestions to enhance guests’ culinary experiences. The Junior Sommelier will work closely with food and beverage outlets to ensure staff are well-trained on beverage programs and professional service standards. Responsibilities include managing the wine cellar, overseeing inventory control, cost management, and conducting wine tastings and events to engage guests and staff alike.
This role requires someone who is knowledgeable about wine and beverage management, particularly from the Napa Valley region, and who possesses strong leadership skills to train and motivate a team. The Junior Sommelier acts as a liaison between the culinary offerings and beverage selections to create harmonious guest experiences. Operating as a manager on duty when required, the Junior Sommelier must demonstrate excellent organizational acumen and a commitment to exceeding guest expectations through service excellence.
Candidates can expect to work flexible hours including early mornings, mid-days, and evenings to support 24/7 operational needs. Job Requirements
- Valid US work authorization
- Minimum 2-3 years experience in a similar role
- Strong knowledge of Napa Valley and surrounding areas
- College degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management or Beverage Management preferred
- Certified wine and beverage education preferred
- Working technical knowledge of accounting principles and corporate policies
- Ability to work flexible hours including early mornings, mid-days, and evenings
- Strong leadership capabilities
- Excellent communication skills
- Commitment to exceptional guest service
- Ability to manage inventory, costs, and perform administrative tasks
Job Qualifications
- College degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management or Beverage Management preferred
- Certified wine and beverage education through CMS, WSET, or similar preferred
- Minimum 2-3 years experience in a similar wine or beverage role
- Strong knowledge of Napa Valley wine region
- Working technical knowledge of accounting principles and corporate policies
- Demonstrated leadership and staff training skills
- Excellent communication and guest service abilities
- Ability to manage inventory and cost controls effectively
Job Duties
- Maintain accurate beverage program including wine list updates and POS system
- Train staff on beverage program across all Food & Beverage outlets
- Lead, motivate, coach, and discipline employees in the Resort's Main Restaurant
- Ensure guest satisfaction through exceptional service and attention
- Manage shifts as a manager on duty including opening and closing procedures
- Oversee wine cellar including receipt, storage, inventory, and ordering of beverages
- Develop and maintain controls for beverage costs to maximize profitability
- Provide reports and analytics on beverage sales and costs
- Participate in staff meetings to communicate policies, sales, and service updates
- Host events and tastings for guests
- Address inventory, sales forecast, and budget discrepancies
- Work floor assisting guests with beverage selections and service
- Provide professional beverage service including correct temperature, glassware, and attitude
- Foster staff development with educational opportunities
- Develop educational materials on wine knowledge, service, and professional standards
- Maintain excellent beverage knowledge through ongoing education and industry relationships
