Job Description

Tulare County is seeking a dedicated and experienced Investigator to join the District Attorney's Office located in Visalia, California. As a government establishment, the Tulare County District Attorney's Office plays a critical role in the pursuit of justice by investigating and prosecuting felony and misdemeanor crimes. This office also collaborates with other essential county departments, including the Public Defender and Child Support Services, to ensure comprehensive legal services and support to the community. The role of the Investigator in the District Attorney's Office is complex and vital. This position is responsible for conducting detailed investigations into felony and misdemeanor crimes by gathering, assembling, preserving, and presenting evidence critical to the prosecution process. Investigators work on major complex cases including but not limited to fraud, political corruption, complex homicides, and capital cases. The Investigator actively interviews a wide range of individuals such as victims, defendants, complainants, witnesses, and other persons relevant to obtaining essential information for case development. This role necessitates an understanding of psychological backgrounds, particularly in sensitive cases such as death penalty investigations. The Investigator must also analyze and evaluate testimonies, make detailed notes on significant points, and prepare thorough reports to support legal proceedings. In addition, the position involves close collaboration with other law enforcement personnel including Probation Officers and Social Service Workers to locate absent parents or other responsible parties, further emphasizing the multifaceted nature of this position. The job requires deep knowledge of various laws such as arrest procedures, search and seizure, and penal codes. A key component of the position is successful completion of an 80-hour POST Investigator Course within the first year of hire, ensuring the individual remains proficient and up-to-date with investigative best practices. Job Requirements

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12) grade supplemented by technical courses in police science or investigation
  • three (3) years of experience as a peace officer including one (1) year performing criminal investigations
  • possession of, or ability to obtain, a Regular Basic Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certificate
  • possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver’s license
  • ability to work and communicate effectively with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds by respecting beliefs, interpersonal styles and behaviors
  • ability to operate contemporary office equipment including computer and electronic devices
  • ability to read and understand mapped information, legal documents and codes
  • ability to write clear, concise and accurate reports
  • ability to file alphabetically and numerically

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Investigate felony and misdemeanor crimes by gathering, assembling, preserving, and reporting facts and evidence
  • investigate and organize major complex investigations including major fraud, political corruption, complex homicides, and capital cases
  • interview victims, defendants, complainants, witnesses, and other persons who may provide information pertinent to the case
  • investigate psychological backgrounds in certain cases including but not limited to death penalty cases
  • analyze and evaluate testimony, make notes of significant points, and prepare reports of the investigation
  • work closely with Probation Officers, Social Service Workers, and other law enforcement officers in locating absent parents or other responsible relatives
