Job Description
The Phoenix Union High School District (PXU) is a prominent educational institution located in Arizona's capital city, proudly serving a diverse community of approximately 24,000 students and employing around 3,400 staff members. PXU operates a comprehensive network of schools including traditional high schools, small specialty schools, support schools, micro schools, magnet programs, and extensive Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings. This diverse portfolio reflects PXU's commitment to offering educational opportunities that cater to a wide range of student needs and aspirations. As an employer, PXU is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, welcoming, and inspiring environment for both students and staff alike, nurturing future leaders and professionals who will excel and contribute meaningfully to society.
The role of Interpreter/Receptionist at PXU is classified under their Education Support Professional salary schedule and is a vital part of the district’s support team. This position is based in a school location, specifically at Betty Fairfax High School or other site assignments as designated, with a work year spanning nine months. The hourly rate for this grade 5 position ranges from $19.38 to $20.26, placement depending on relevant experience and educational background.
This dual-role position combines front-line customer service with specialized interpretation and translation duties, primarily serving the district's linguistically diverse community. The Interpreter/Receptionist is responsible for greeting and screening visitors and incoming phone calls, ensuring an efficient and welcoming communication flow. In addition to handling clerical duties, this role requires proficiency in both oral interpretation and written translation, particularly between English and Spanish, supporting non-English speaking students and families at school events such as parent-teacher conferences and disciplinary hearings.
The position demands a high degree of confidentiality and professionalism, as well as the ability to effectively communicate school policies and ensure safety. The interpreter aspect involves translating complex and sensitive information accurately while preserving meaning and context. The receptionist duties support daily administrative functions including managing school site telephone systems, maintaining updated campus directories and schedules, and responding to general inquiries promptly.
Successful candidates for this position will demonstrate strong bilingual communication skills, attention to detail, and an ability to multitask in a busy educational environment. Skills in document translation, professional report writing, computer literacy, and keyboarding will greatly support the effective execution of these responsibilities. The position also plays an integral role in building positive relationships between PXU and the community, enhancing customer service experiences and maintaining a professional school environment.
PXU emphasizes nondiscrimination and equal opportunity, promoting a workplace free of bias related to race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, national origin, and immigration status. This commitment extends throughout the district's policies and practices, contributing to a respectful and inclusive culture.
In summary, the Interpreter/Receptionist role at PXU is a multifaceted and essential function combining administrative support with bilingual communication expertise. It offers a competitive wage and the opportunity to make a significant impact within a dynamic school district devoted to student success and community engagement. This position is ideal for individuals who are bilingual in English and Spanish, are skilled communicators, and are passionate about supporting diverse learners and families in an educational setting.
