The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Abilene District is actively seeking motivated and eager students to join its esteemed intern program primarily for the summer months spanning from May through August, with potential opportunities to continue part-time throughout the year based on individual schedules and availability. Interns will perform a variety of entry-level administrative duties including answering and routing telephone inquiries, assisting in maintaining confidential records, inventory management of materials and supplies, and routine processing of departmental documents such as vouchers and personnel files. Interns may also assist with public information dissemination, event coordination, and general warehousing tasks such as stocking and issuing supplies. Throughout their internship, students will engage with multiple facets of department operations, improving organizational skills, communication abilities, and technical proficiency with administrative tasks. Job Requirements
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Must be a currently enrolled student in high school or any institution of higher education including trade/vocational school
- Able to lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally and carry files or small tools
- Capable of prolonged periods of sitting and standing
- Must demonstrate good visual acuity to perform data entry and computer work
- Employees 18 years or older with a valid driver’s license may be assigned driving duties and use power tools
- Must be able to follow safety protocols and work in a team environment
Job Qualifications
- Must be enrolled as a student in high school or any institution of higher education including trade/vocational school
- Demonstrates strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to follow specific instructions and perform tasks under supervision
- Basic knowledge of office administrative procedures
- Capable of maintaining confidentiality
- Ability to use standard office equipment including telephones and computers
- Willingness to learn new tasks and adapt to various responsibilities
Job Duties
- Answers the telephone, evaluates requests, answers questions, routes messages, and/or serves as receptionist or front desk assistant
- Assists in maintaining confidential information and records
- Assists in performing inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment
- Assists in processing routine documents such as vouchers, personnel records, titles or registrations
- Assists with general warehousing duties such as stocking and issuing materials and supplies, maintaining records, and maintaining warehouse areas
- Disseminates information to the public
- Maintains files, records, and logs
- Maintains radio contact with field units and others
