Job Description
The VA New Jersey Healthcare System, serving locations in Lyons and East Orange, NJ, is a vital part of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. This healthcare establishment is dedicated to providing comprehensive medical services and support to veterans, ensuring they receive the care, respect, and attention they deserve. As part of a national network of facilities, the VA New Jersey Healthcare System is committed to improving veterans' health outcomes through state-of-the-art medical treatments, wellness programs, and supportive services tailored specifically for those who have served the nation. The agency operates complex healthcare facilities with a focus on high standards of patient care, safety, and satisfaction.
Within this esteemed organization, the Nutrition and Food Service department plays an essential role by preparing nutritious and therapeutic meals that meet the dietary needs of veterans. These meals are designed to support health and recovery, taking into account special dietary restrictions such as diabetic, low sodium, low protein, or gluten-free options. The position currently open is for an Intermittent Cook, offering flexible, intermittent work schedules with various shifts available to accommodate the needs of the healthcare system.
The Intermittent Cook at the VA New Jersey Healthcare System is responsible for independently preparing and cooking a diverse range of meals, including entrees and desserts aligned with both regular and therapeutic diets. This role requires strong culinary skills, attention to detail regarding dietary requirements, and the ability to manage multiple cooking processes simultaneously to ensure timely and high-quality meal service. The cook will work closely with food service teams, adhering strictly to food safety, sanitation standards, and operational protocols to maintain the highest level of cleanliness and quality in food preparation and service.
This position not only emphasizes culinary expertise but also highlights physical stamina and the ability to work efficiently in fast-paced kitchen environments subject to temperature extremes and potential hazards such as burns and cuts. The cook will operate commercial kitchen equipment safely, prepare various food items including meats, vegetables, and desserts, and ensure all food is accurately labeled and handled per regulatory guidelines. Excellent hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and a proactive stance on workplace safety are essential qualities for success in this role.
The salary range for this position is competitive, starting from $28.27 to $32.99 per hour, classified under the WG 6 pay scale and grade. Employment is on an intermittent, non-full-time basis with no promotion potential but offers the unique opportunity to contribute to a federally supported mission that honors and serves veterans. The position requires U.S. citizenship and adherence to federal hiring policies including background checks and compliance with health standards such as annual influenza vaccinations.
Overall, the Intermittent Cook position at the VA New Jersey Healthcare System presents a meaningful career opportunity for individuals passionate about cooking, eager to serve veteran communities, and committed to upholding federal workplace standards and ethical practices. It offers a rewarding environment where culinary skills directly impact the health and well-being of those who have served the United States, making it a pivotal role within the healthcare support services framework.
