The position available is a part-time Cooking Instructor role, offering a flexible work schedule averaging less than 20 hours per week with possible evening and weekend hours depending on class scheduling. The salary range is $15.76 to $21.27 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. The primary responsibility of the Cooking Instructor is to provide quality culinary instruction to participants of various ages, introducing them to diverse cooking techniques, ingredients, and international cuisines. The role involves developing and implementing engaging lesson plans that promote kitchen safety, creativity, and confidence. This position requires maintaining compliance with food handling and sanitation standards, managing class supplies within budget, and ensuring a safe classroom environment.

Beyond teaching, the Cooking Instructor also performs essential administrative tasks like participant skill assessments, attendance tracking, class evaluations, and preparing class descriptions for promotional materials. The instructor must communicate effectively with participants, parents or guardians, and recreation staff, offering make-up sessions when necessary. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and have a minimum of one year teaching experience in cooking classes. First Aid and CPR certification is essential or must be obtained within 60 days of hire. The role demands a combination of culinary proficiency, strong communication, customer service skills, and the ability to handle difficult situations with patience and diplomacy. Physical demands include light to moderate physical activity such as standing, walking, and moving equipment related to cooking classes.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum one year experience teaching cooking classes
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain within 60 days
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Ability to perform light to moderate physical activity including standing, walking, and moving equipment
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to interact with diverse populations
  • Able to handle emergencies and difficult situations
  • Must pass criminal background check including sex offender search

Job Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED
  • One year experience teaching cooking classes
  • Some coursework in recreation, education, or related field preferred
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age at time of hire
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain certification within 60 days of employment

Job Duties

  • Introduce participants to a variety of cooking techniques, ingredients, and cuisines from around the world while promoting kitchen safety, creativity, and confidence in the kitchen
  • Ensure compliance with all food handling, sanitation, and safety standards
  • Purchase, organize, and manage ingredients and supplies within established budgets
  • Provide safe and effective class instruction to registered participants
  • Develop and implement age-appropriate lesson plans featuring a variety of cuisines and cooking styles including Italian, Mexican, Chinese, American, Mediterranean, and French dishes
  • Participate in required training
  • Inspect classroom, program environment, equipment, materials, and ingredients to ensure safety
  • Handle emergencies according to established procedures
  • Complete administrative tasks such as skills assessment of participants, attendance sheets, class evaluations, and class description for brochures
  • Provide make-up sessions as required
  • Communicate effectively with recreation staff, participants, and parents or guardians
  • Perform other duties as assigned
