Job Description

The position of Instructor in Food, Nutrition, and Hospitality is a full-time faculty role within Owens Community College’s culinary arts program. The instructor will be responsible for teaching fundamental culinary skills, quantity food preparation, and advanced topics such as baking and pastry, garde manger, and management leadership. This role involves both lecture and lab instruction, emphasizing hands-on learning while maintaining food safety and sanitation standards. The anticipated start date is the Spring Semester of January 2027.

This role is pivotal in shaping future culinary professionals by imparting essential knowledge and skills aligned with industry standards. The instructor will utilize current culinary principles and techniques, integrating practical applications in menu development, baking, international cuisines, catering, banquet operations, and dining services. The position requires proficiency in operating a variety of kitchen equipment and in leading student teams in a high-paced environment. Beyond culinary expertise, the instructor will apply effective leadership, communication, and organizational skills to foster a collaborative and supportive learning experience.

The instructor will work closely with department chairs, program coordinators, and lab staff to manage course planning, budget oversight, and curriculum delivery. This role demands a strong commitment to student success and includes responsibilities such as maintaining effective relationships with faculty, staff, and students, preparing educational materials, and evaluating student performance. The college’s work schedule is designed to meet the needs of students and the department, with flexibility for changing semester requirements. The role is classified as exempt and unionized under the Owens Faculty Association, with a salary starting at $50,000. The position is not grant-funded and includes 173 duty days per academic year.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited culinary program
  • certifiable by the ACF as Sous Chef or higher
  • two years supervisory chef experience
  • four years culinary industry experience
  • ACF certification or eligibility within one year
  • NRAEF ServSafe Manager certification
  • Ohio Department of Health Level II Food Protection certificate
  • First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain
  • experience with food safety and sanitation procedures
  • ability to operate various food preparation equipment
  • strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • proficiency in technology and software
  • leadership and team-building capability
  • ability to manage budgets and maintain records

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited culinary program
  • certifiable by the American Culinary Federation (ACF) as a Sous Chef or higher
  • two years supervisory chef experience
  • four years hands-on culinary industry experience
  • NRAEF ServSafe Manager certification
  • Ohio Department of Health Level II Food Protection certificate
  • First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain within six months
  • proficiency with Microsoft Office and course management software
  • strong leadership and communication skills
