Job Description

The United States Navy offers a dynamic and challenging career as an Information Technology Professional, specifically within the Information Systems Technician (IT), Cryptologic Technician Networks (CTN), and Intelligence Specialist (IS) communities. These specialists play a critical role in maintaining the security, connectivity, and intelligence capabilities of the Fleet, supporting naval operations around the globe. The Navy, as a highly respected branch of the military, is dedicated to protecting the nation and its interests by leveraging advanced technology and intelligence systems to maintain superiority in modern warfare environments. As an Information Technology Professional in the Navy, individuals operate in a mission-critical environment where cyber operations, network defense, intelligence gathering, and communication systems management are integral to national security.

These roles encompass a wide range of responsibilities and require individuals to work in fast-paced, high-pressure conditions, often supporting 24/7 operations and allied forces worldwide. Information Systems Technicians are responsible for designing, operating, securing, and restoring networks, servers, and communication systems that underpin naval missions. Cryptologic Technician Networks specialists conduct offensive and defensive cyber operations, investigate and track adversary activities, and protect Navy networks and critical systems from cyber threats. Intelligence Specialists gather and analyze information related to adversaries, marine and terrestrial environments, and weather, producing actionable intelligence products and briefings that help commanders make informed decisions.

Professionals in these roles can expect a work environment involving worldwide assignments, both ashore and afloat, including ships, submarines, and aircraft. The work takes place in secure facilities such as server rooms, operations centers, and shipboard communication spaces. Teamwork and coordination with information warfare and intelligence teams, as well as supported operational units, are vital to mission success. The Navy offers comprehensive training pathways, from initial recruit training to specialized Class A Schools and advanced C schools, providing cutting-edge instruction in cyber operations, network defense, digital forensics, signals analysis, intelligence production, and more. Advancement is based on individual performance, qualifications, and the attainment of professional warfare distinctions.

Employment in these Navy specialties is available through direct enlistment or in-service conversion opportunities, with Reserve accession pathways for prior service members or qualified civilian professionals as needed. Benefits include competitive pay following standard Navy active and reserve policies, health coverage, allowances, retirement options, and access to educational programs such as Tuition Assistance, the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Navy COOL certifications, and apprenticeship programs. Additionally, incentives like bonuses and loan repayment may occasionally be available. Working as an Information Technology Professional in the Navy offers the unique combination of serving the country, continuous learning, and career advancement in a high-tech and rapidly evolving field.
