Job Description

DuPage County Health Department is a reputable public health organization committed to improving the wellness and health outcomes of residents within DuPage County, Illinois. The DuPage County Health Department’s Quality and Compliance team is seeking an experienced Infection Preventionist for a full-time role based at 111 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, IL. This position offers an annual salary range between $60,300 and $68,300. The schedule is Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with a hybrid work arrangement option, blending onsite engagement with remote work flexibility.

As an Infection Preventionist, you will play a crucial role in planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating the department’s infection prevention and control (IPC) program. You will be tasked with interpreting complex federal, state, and local regulations along with accreditation standards to create, revise, and enforce IPC policies, procedures, and protocols. Your responsibilities include managing the agency’s infection control efforts, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements, and promoting best practices to mitigate infection risks across clinical programs and other settings.

This pivotal role requires maintaining up-to-date knowledge of legal and regulatory changes affecting infection prevention practices and the capability to develop and execute compliance strategies effectively. You will conduct internal audits, provide expert consultation, education, and training to staff, and facilitate continuous quality improvement initiatives. Your expertise will contribute to licensing and accreditation processes as well as emergency response activities.

The position demands strong skills in project management, data analysis, problem-solving, and leadership. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional communication abilities and relationship-building skills to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels. Additionally, this role emphasizes cultural sensitivity and the ability to deliver inclusive services to diverse populations. The Infection Preventionist will be expected to maintain confidentiality, uphold ethical standards, and foster a culture of safety and compliance.

Job Requirements

  • Completion of a master's or doctoral degree in nursing, public health, epidemiology, health science or related field and at least one year of experience in infection prevention is preferred
  • a bachelor's degree and three years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
  • requires Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) through the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology within two years of employment
  • Illinois Registered Nurse license is preferred
  • must have a valid driver's license and dependable vehicle to travel to agency locations throughout DuPage County

Job Duties

  • Manages the agency infection prevention and control program
  • monitors compliance with federal, state and local regulatory requirements and accreditation standards
  • keeps up to date on laws and regulations that may affect policies and procedures and develops recommended updates
  • recommends and implements strategies to promote compliance pertaining to infection prevention and control
  • conducts and coordinates internal auditing of infection prevention practices
  • liaises with Human Resources or designee for employee health-related activities based on identified needs
  • provides consultation, education, and training for DCHD staff on IPC related issues
  • develops processes to ensure that all DCHD healthcare personnel understand and are competent to adhere to infection prevention requirements
  • supports ongoing updates to agency plans and ensures fulfillment of reporting requirements
  • participates in licensing and accreditation activities
  • implements strategies for continuous quality improvement
  • provides support and direction to IPC activities for all DCHD clinical programs and settings
  • participates in agency committee(s) as assigned
  • provides staff training, consultation, education and related resources on IPC topics and issues
  • presents findings of data analysis
  • maintains collaborative relationships with co-workers
  • participates in emergency activities as assigned
  • maintains required training, licensure and/or certification
  • maintains confidentiality of privileged information and adheres to privacy laws
  • demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of other ethnic groups and cultures
