Individual Placement - National Estuary Program Grant Watershed

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults in the United States. This particular role, the National Estuary Program Grant Watershed Individual Placement, is part of an exciting initiative funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and administered by Restore America’s Estuaries. Houston Parks Board is spearheading efforts to restore and create eight new wetland sites within the City of Houston to improve watershed health, biodiversity, and resilience. The participant selected for this placement will actively assist in the planning, preparation, and implementation of two of these wetland restoration projects. This hands-on opportunity allows the participant to make a tangible impact on local habitats by engaging in varied tasks like conducting site monitoring, assisting with volunteer events, planting wetland vegetation, and collaborating with contractors. The service period runs from October 5, 2026, through March 26, 2027, with an average commitment of 20 hours per week, making it an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking to gain real-world experience in environmental conservation and ecological restoration.

Throughout the placement, the participant will be instrumental in supporting the success of these habitat restoration projects, which are essential to mitigating pollution, enhancing wildlife habitats, and improving water quality in Houston’s urban environment. The program also includes educational components such as participating in wetland-focused webinars and creating content for volunteer education and recruitment. Candidates will develop specialized skills relevant to wetland ecology, project management, and community engagement, all while working under the guidance of experienced conservation professionals. Compensation for this role is $20 per hour alongside a $28 weekly commuter allowance. This position is open to local candidates only, as no housing accommodations are provided. The role is not eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award.
