The Hy-Chi Department Clerk role plays a critical part in Hy-Vee's food service and grocery departments, particularly in the Hy-Chi (hot food and deli) department. This non-exempt position is responsible for fulfilling customer orders with accuracy and care, ensuring proper food handling and sanitation, managing inventory, and delivering excellent customer service. As a Hy-Chi Department Clerk, you will be the face of the department, engaging with customers directly by welcoming them with a smile, taking orders at the department counter, and assisting with product location and transportation. You will handle tasks such as checking in products, maintaining food freshness, labeling and dating items, and ensuring an adequate supply of prepared food is available. Additionally, you will aid in the smooth operation of the department by reviewing daily orders, preparing and replenishing food products, and using various kitchen and store equipment efficiently and safely.
This role requires compliance with sanitation guidelines, company policies, and store-specific standards related to dress and hygiene, emphasizing personal responsibility and teamwork. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Six months or less of similar or related experience
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Ability to perform physical activities including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, finger dexterity, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
- Ability to carry out detailed but straightforward written or verbal instructions
- Basic addition and subtraction skills
- Ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions
- Adherence to company personal hygiene and dress standards
- Punctuality and reliability
- Successful completion of pre-employment drug screen
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Six months or less of related experience preferred
- Ability to understand and follow verbal or written instructions
- Basic math skills including addition and subtraction
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, balancing, stooping, and repetitive motions
- Familiarity with food safety and sanitation practices preferred

Job Duties
- Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions
- Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner whether in the department or elsewhere in the store
- Make an effort to learn customers’ names and assist them such as escorting to products, securing items, loading/unloading heavy items, noting customer suggestions
- Answer telephone promptly and provide helpful service including taking customer orders
- Take orders at the Hy-Chi Department counter
- Work with coworkers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and pleasant work environment
- Review daily orders and ensure proper food handling, sanitation and cleanliness of work area
- Monitor food freshness and ensure adequate food supply is ready and available
- Prepare, finish, and replenish products as necessary
- Pull product from cooler/freezer to prepare for cooking
- Check in products, put away items, and review invoices
- Run department register and handle payments where applicable
- Remove trash in a timely manner
- Maintain adherence to personal hygiene and dress guidelines
- Follow company policies and report to work on time
- Perform secondary duties such as washing dishes, ordering products and supplies, pricing products, delivering orders, assisting other store areas, and other job-related duties as assigned
