Hy-Vee is currently seeking a Hy-Chi Department Clerk to join their team. This non-exempt position involves responsibilities within the Hy-Chi department, including filling customer orders and handling food safely. The role is critical for ensuring that Hy-Vee’s commitment to freshness, quality, and customer satisfaction is upheld. The Hy-Chi Department Clerk will be responsible for ordering and receiving products, verifying that orders are correct, labeling and dating items, and properly storing products. This role requires attention to detail and adherence to food safety standards.
The position involves direct interaction with customers. Providing courteous, friendly, and efficient service is essential to maintain a positive company image. The clerk will greet customers, assist with locating products, take customer orders at the Hy-Chi counter, and respond to customer inquiries both in-person and by phone. The Hy-Chi Department Clerk also performs routine tasks like checking the freshness and appearance of food, developing or following production lists, pulling product from coolers and freezers for preparation, and managing the department register when needed. The role will occasionally demand physical exertion such as lifting up to 50 pounds, standing for extended periods, and working with equipment like ovens, steamers, mixers, and registers.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Six months or less of related experience
- Ability to provide excellent customer service
- Ability to follow detailed but simple instructions
- Basic math skills
- Physical ability to exert up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Ability to perform physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, finger dexterity, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions
- Willingness to work night and weekend shifts
- Successful completion of pre-employment drug screen
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Six months or less of similar or related experience
- Strong customer service skills
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Basic math skills including addition and subtraction
- Effective communication skills
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Physical ability to handle moderate lifting and perform tasks such as climbing and standing
- Familiarity with food safety and sanitation practices preferred
Job Duties
- Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions
- Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner wherever encounter occurs in the store
- Learn customers’ names and address them by name whenever possible, assist customers by escorting, securing products, and enhancing shopping experience
- Answer telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service including taking orders
- Take customer orders at the Hy-Chi Department counter
- Work collaboratively with co-workers to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
- Review orders for the day and ensure proper sanitation procedures are followed
- Check the status and appearance of food for freshness
- Ensure adequate food supply is ready and follow or develop production lists
- Anticipate product needs daily
- Prepare, finish, and replenish product as necessary
- Pull product from cooler/freezer for cooking
- Check in products, put them away, and review invoices
- Run the department register and manage payment transactions where applicable
- Remove trash promptly
- Maintain adherence to hygiene and dress guidelines
- Report to work on schedule and follow company policies
- Wash dishes as necessary
- Order product and supplies as needed
- Price products for customers
- Deliver orders as needed
- Assist in other store areas as required
- Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned
