The position of Hy-Chi Department Clerk is a vital retail role within Hy-Vee's Hy-Chi department. As a Hy-Chi Department Clerk, you will be entrusted with responsibilities that ensure customers receive accurate, fresh, and safely handled food products. Your role includes filling customer orders, managing product inventory by ordering and receiving supplies, maintaining proper labeling and dating of products, and ensuring that orders are correct before products are stocked. Customer service is at the heart of this position, requiring you to interact with customers and team members with patience, friendliness, and professionalism. You will be expected to greet customers warmly, assist with locating products, handling special order requests, and answering telephone inquiries promptly.

This non-exempt role reports directly to leadership personnel such as the District Store Director, Store Managers, and Department Managers, with no supervisory responsibilities over others. It demands attention to detail, adherence to strict sanitation and safety standards, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, sometimes high-pressure, environment. Physical demands of the role require exerting force for lifting and moving products, as well as performing various physical activities like climbing, balancing, and repetitive motions. Working conditions involve exposure to dust, temperature extremes, and occasional cleaning chemicals.

In addition to primary responsibilities, the clerk may assist with secondary duties such as washing dishes, pricing products, delivering orders, and other store-related tasks as assigned. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six months or less of similar or related experience
  • Ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved instructions
  • Ability to perform simple addition and subtraction
  • Ability to follow verbal or demonstrated instructions
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally
  • Ability to perform physical activities including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, finger dexterity, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Availability to report to work on time and adhere to company policies
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening

Job Duties

  • Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service

  • Learn customers’ names and assist with product location and order preparation
  • Answer telephone calls and take customer orders
  • Work with team members to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
  • Review orders and food freshness daily
  • Ensure proper sanitation and cleanliness of work area
  • Prepare and replenish product
  • Check in and put away product and review invoices
  • Operate the department register and handle payments
  • Remove trash in a timely manner
  • Adhere to company policies and dress guidelines
  • Wash dishes, order products and supplies when needed
  • Price products for customers
  • Deliver orders when required
  • Assist in other store areas as needed
  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned
