HVAC Mechanic

The Housing Facilities team within the Division of University Housing is responsible for the upkeep and operation of multiple mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems throughout these properties. They ensure that all the infrastructure supporting housing and dining facilities functions optimally and safely, thus enhancing the residential experience on campus.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking a full-time HVAC-R Mechanic to join the Mechanical Maintenance team in the Housing Facilities department. This is a regular, on-site position based in Madison, Wisconsin. The starting hourly wage is $31.00 or higher based on qualifications, and the role includes a competitive benefits package consisting of vacation, holidays, paid time off, and retirement plans. The work schedule is primarily Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with on-call and weekend rotation requirements.

This role focuses on the repair, maintenance, and advanced diagnosis of HVAC systems within University Housing facilities. The HVAC-R Mechanic will work across a variety of buildings, including both occupied residential spaces and common areas, responding swiftly to emergency issues related to sanitation, temperature control, and safety. The position involves leadership duties such as guiding student workers, coordinating with vendors and contractors, and managing facility records and maintenance databases. A collaborative approach to problem-solving and project management is essential for success in this role.

Ideal candidates will have advanced knowledge of building mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, specifically as they relate to HVAC equipment. Extensive experience with commercial HVAC diagnostics, repair work, and system efficiency testing is critical. Candidates should be proficient at installing and repairing HVAC components like actuators, dampers, pumps, and VAVs, as well as maintaining electrical parts such as motors and thermostats. Mechanical aptitude, safety awareness, and communication skills are vital, as the mechanic will often operate in a diverse, highly populated environment and support emergency response efforts.

Additional responsibilities include participating in preventative maintenance to ensure systems continuously operate at peak performance, developing operational work plans, and offering after-hours support during emergencies. This role also requires a valid driver’s license that meets UW Risk Management standards and may involve the use of university vehicles.
