This position is a key role within The Salvation Army's shelter services, designed to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for residents seeking overnight accommodation. The role involves answering telephones courteously, directing calls appropriately, and recording messages accurately. The person in this position will receive deliveries and donations, greeting and announcing visitors and clients with professionalism. Additionally, this position provides general information about The Salvation Army’s operations and services and handles routine clerical duties such as typing and filing. An essential responsibility includes managing the intake and registration of shelter residents each night, ensuring all records and logs are accurately maintained.
The Shelter Intake Coordinator monitors the activities of residents during an assigned shift, ensuring safety, security, and adherence to house rules. This involves monitoring security cameras, checking the security of windows and doors, and making periodic rounds throughout the facility. The role requires vigilance and excellent interpersonal skills to control, lead, and motivate behavior effectively. The successful candidate will be meticulous in maintaining accurate records and logs of any unusual activities or unique situations encountered during shifts.
Furthermore, this position requires balancing and securing monetary receipts and managing resident property records carefully. The Shelter Intake Coordinator will collaborate closely with other staff members to maintain the shelter’s neat and orderly condition, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for vulnerable populations. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- one year experience performing security work or working in a social service environment
- one year of experience working in a position with telephone switchboard responsibilities
- ability to communicate effectively in English
- ability to read, write and communicate in English
- ability to meet attendance requirements
- ability to communicate effectively with clients to control, lead and motivate behavior
- any equivalent combination of training and experience providing necessary knowledge, skills and abilities

Job Duties
- Answer telephone courteously and direct calls to appropriate destination
- record accurate and complete messages when necessary
- receive and receipt deliveries and donations
- greet and announce visitors and clients
- provide general information about The Salvation Army's operations and services
- perform routine clerical work such as typing and filing
- accept and process residents staying in shelter overnight
- monitor the activity of residents on an assigned shift ensuring safety, security and compliance to house rules
- maintain accurate and complete records and logs containing pertinent information
- ensure that shelter is maintained in a neat and proper order
- check clients into the shelter
- prepare and monitor client intake cards
- determine if client has been prepaid by sponsor or credit
- prepare resident roster and maintain resident property records
- check the security of all windows and doors
- monitor cameras and make periodic rounds of entire facility
- record any unique situations occurring on assigned shift
- complete required paperwork representing client intake for the day
- input data into the computer to maintain records and generate client lists
- prepare, tally, and balance monies with receipts
- drop money in safe
