Job Description
Meridian International is a respected non-profit organization based in Washington D.C. dedicated to fostering global leadership and enhancing intercultural understanding through dialogue and collaboration. Established over 65 years ago, Meridian has developed a strong reputation for connecting people across cultures, professions, and backgrounds to address global challenges and opportunities. The organization’s mission focuses on empowering diverse voices and promoting non-partisan collaboration in international affairs, education, and professional development. Meridian is committed to fostering an inclusive work environment, championing equal employment opportunities regardless of race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other protected classification by law. This commitment extends to career growth, workplace respect, and comprehensive benefits that support employee well-being and professional fulfillment.
The Houseman Banquets & Events position at Meridian International is a critical role located within two historic, multi-room venues surrounded by formal gardens and outdoor terraces. This role operates under the direct supervision of the Associate Director of Event Operations and the Housemen Supervisor, and it blends hands-on physical duties with the oversight of onsite event logistics. The successful candidate will contribute to the seamless execution of events by supporting the setup and breakdown of furniture, equipment, and audiovisual technology. In addition to front and back of house event support, this role requires coordination and communication with multiple stakeholders including staff and vendors. The Houseman Banquets & Events staff member also oversees miscellaneous tasks such as housekeeping, catering setups, security, and maintenance activities.
The position demands a high level of attention to detail, time management skills, and the ability to juggle multiple priorities with professionalism and a positive attitude. Suitable candidates will have several years of experience in luxury hospitality environments, particularly in hotel banquet operations or related event support roles. Familiarity with audiovisual equipment and experience working in historic venues or non-profits are advantageous. This is a full-time, non-exempt position with an hourly wage ranging from $23.73 to $26.76, commensurate with experience. Work schedules are variable and may require early mornings, late evenings, and some weekend hours to accommodate event schedules. This is considered an essential position, meaning employees must be available during emergency closures when necessary. Meridian prioritizes strong interpersonal communication skills, professionalism in demeanor, and the ability to motivate and mentor team members in event setup and operational excellence.
In addition to the dynamic event environment, the role involves project-based responsibilities such as chandelier cleaning, silver polishing, furniture upkeep, and garden maintenance. Collaboration with the Maintenance team to ensure safety and security of the venue is also key. Administrative duties including timely completion of organizational paperwork and special assignment sheets add an important layer of operational accountability. Meridian offers an inclusive, supportive workplace committed to cultural sensitivity and maturity, making this a stimulating and rewarding opportunity for candidates passionate about hospitality, event management, and global engagement. The organization supports employee growth via training and development, and provides a comprehensive benefits package that enhances work-life balance and financial security.
