Job Description
The Virginia Department of General Services (DGS) is a state agency responsible for providing a wide range of support services to state government operations, including facilities maintenance, procurement, and real estate management. Operating within this framework, the DGS Bureau of Facilities & Maintenance (BFM) works diligently to maintain and operate approximately 6.45 million square feet of state-owned space across the Capitol Complex and metropolitan Richmond area. This includes prominent sites such as office buildings, the State Capitol, the Governor's Mansion, and monuments, serving roughly 75 state and legislative agencies in the Capitol Square complex. DGS prides itself on offering high-quality, cost-effective, and timely services to ensure a safe and efficient working environment for public servants and visitors alike.
The Housekeeping Day Porter - EC393 role is a full-time, salaried position based in Richmond, Virginia, specifically servicing the newly constructed General Assembly Building (GAB) and other properties under DGS management. The salary range for this position is between $33,212 and $37,562, corresponding to Pay Band 1. This role is classified under the Trades and Operations category, reflecting its hands-on nature in maintaining facility cleanliness and supporting overall building operations.
As a Housekeeping Day Porter, the selected candidate will be an essential part of the Division of Capitol Square Services’ customer-oriented team. This role demands a dedicated professional who takes pride in ensuring workplaces are clean, safe, and healthy. The Housekeeping Worker will conduct a variety of cleaning and custodial tasks to uphold high sanitation standards throughout high-traffic and public areas such as lobbies, hallways, restrooms, breakrooms, and building entrances. Responsibilities include responding promptly to cleaning needs, restocking supplies, and supporting event setups, all of which contribute to an inviting and hygienic environment.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience operating industrial cleaning equipment and a comprehensive knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials, and chemical safety practices. They must be capable of following both written and oral instructions and safely handle physical activity such as lifting and moving items up to 20 pounds. The role requires continuous activity during shifts, including walking, standing, bending, and working indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions.
This position also emphasizes customer service, requiring the Housekeeping Day Porter to interact professionally with staff and visitors, addressing their needs and requests effectively. Reporting maintenance issues like leaks or hazards ensures operational safety and sustained facility appearance. The department supports its employees through excellent benefits, including health insurance, paid leave, life insurance, disability benefits, wellness programs, and a state retirement plan with employer matching. Eligible employees may also benefit from programs like the Public Student Loan Forgiveness Program.
Applicants must be willing to work the scheduled hours of Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM, and submit their applications online via the official DGS website. A fingerprint-based criminal background check is required for hiring. The Virginia Department of General Services is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, encouraging individuals from underrepresented groups, veterans, and persons with disabilities to apply. Special accommodations for the application and interview process are also available, reflecting the agency’s commitment to accessibility and equal opportunity.
