Job Description

The Virginia Department of General Services (DGS) Bureau of Facilities & Maintenance (BFM), operating within the Division of Capitol Square Services (DCSS), is a pivotal organization dedicated to delivering high-quality, cost-effective, and timely maintenance and housekeeping services to a diverse group of state and legislative agencies. Covering an expansive 6.45 million square feet of office space across the Capitol Square complex and various metropolitan Richmond locations, including key landmarks such as the State Capitol, the Governor's Mansion, and historic monuments, DGS strives to maintain these facilities to the highest standards. The department is known for its customer-oriented approach, targeting the comfort, safety, and satisfaction of approximately 75 different tenants under its care. DGS’s commitment to excellence and community service makes it a respected employer within state government agencies in Virginia.

The Housekeeping Day Porter position is an essential role within this organization, specifically tasked with maintaining the cleanliness and operational readiness of buildings under DGS management, including the recently constructed General Assembly Building in downtown Richmond. This role is vital in supporting a clean, safe, and healthful environment for both tenants and visitors. The Housekeeping Day Porter will carry out a variety of cleaning and custodial tasks, ensuring that high-traffic areas such as lobbies, hallways, restrooms, and break rooms remain sanitary and well-stocked throughout the day. Responsibilities include restocking essential supplies like paper products, soap, and sanitizer, and promptly responding to urgent cleaning needs like spills or accidents to maintain safety and hygiene.

This role also involves the daily emptying and relining of trash and recycling containers, continuous cleaning and disinfecting of restrooms, and upkeep of other surfaces including doors, glass, counters, and fixtures. Beyond routine cleaning, the Housekeeping Day Porter supports event logistics by assisting in set-up and breakdown activities, such as arranging furniture and light cleanup. This position requires active monitoring of building appearance to manage issues like fingerprints, debris, and clutter, and the ability to identify and report maintenance problems such as leaks or broken fixtures to ensure prompt action. Strong customer service skills are essential, as this team member serves as a friendly and professional point of contact for tenant requests.

Employees in this role benefit from a supportive working environment and a comprehensive set of employment benefits. The position offers a competitive salary range from $33,212 to $37,562 and operates on a Monday through Friday schedule from 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM. DGS provides excellent health insurance options, including dental and vision coverage, pre-tax spending accounts, paid life insurance, and disability benefits. The department also offers generous holiday and vacation leave, wellness programs, and participation in the state retirement plan with employer-matched tax-deferred savings options. Additionally, DGS is a qualifying employer in the Public Student Loan Forgiveness Program, highlighting its commitment to supporting employee financial well-being. As part of its inclusive hiring practices, DGS encourages applications from veterans, individuals with disabilities, and those with national service experience, ensuring equal opportunity for all candidates. The position requires compliance with safety standards, a background check, and eligibility to work in the United States.
