Job Description
NGIS San Nicolas Island operates as part of the Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) Enterprise, providing essential services to active-duty military personnel, retirees, reservists, and their families. The role available is that of a Federal Housekeeper situated on San Nicolas Island, an opportunity that includes unique benefits such as provided on-island housing for all associates and no-cost flights to and from Point Mugu and San Nicolas Island during designated days off. The position pays $18.78 per hour and requires flexibility to work various shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. The position involves regularly performing a full range and scope of housekeeping services to maintain the high standards expected at Navy lodging facilities. Key responsibilities include cleaning guest rooms, public spaces, storage and laundry areas, and exterior spaces. The role demands proficiency in handling various cleaning tasks such as vacuuming, mopping, dusting, scrubbing, washing, polishing, and debris removal. Housekeepers operate both hand and powered cleaning equipment and manage the handling and transportation of clean and dirty linens and towels. Maintaining the functionality of equipment and reporting necessary repairs is also part of the role.
Housekeepers ensure the hygienic upkeep of bathrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms, including deep cleaning procedures for pet-friendly and ADA service animal rooms. Customer service forms a fundamental aspect of this job, requiring greeting guests warmly and upholding privacy and security standards. Housekeepers also ensure that all rooms are equipped with the proper amenities, electronic devices are set up correctly, and that the surroundings are kept neat and organized.
Additional duties involve managing and coordinating breakfast service areas, performing laundry operations, maintaining cleanliness of exterior facilities like parking lots and passageways, and assisting with supply receipt and storage management. Employees may be required to use common hand tools, manage keys responsibly, and communicate any unusual situations or lost and found items to the supervisors immediately.

Job Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred
- No experience required
- Ability to perform physical tasks including moving furniture and using hand or lightweight powered cleaning equipment
- Must be able to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays
- Must reside on San Nicolas Island with provided housing
- Must be able to work full-time 35+ hours
- Must obtain NHG housekeeping certification within 6 months of employment
- Must complete all required safety and security training
- May need valid state driver’s license for travel within job scope
Job Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred
- Previous housekeeping experience preferred but not required
- Ability to operate cleaning equipment safely and efficiently
- Strong attention to detail and cleanliness standards
- Ability to communicate effectively and maintain customer relations
- Knowledge of safety and sanitation procedures
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Physical ability to perform moderate physical effort including moving furniture and handling cleaning equipment

Job Duties
- Cleans guest rooms and other assigned areas
- Operates cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaner, carpet cleaner, waxer and polisher
- Empties wastebaskets, dusts, waxes and polishes room furniture
- Washes walls, partitions, air vents, disinfects and deodorizes toilet bowls, lavatories etc
- Washes and replaces window treatments and cleans ceiling fixtures
- Changes light bulbs and room partitions using ladders and scaffolds
- Moves furniture to clean under and behind
- Cleans bathroom areas including tub, tile walls, commode, floors and vanity
- Cleans kitchen area including stoves, ovens, microwave, refrigerator, cabinets and floor
- Washes and disinfects dishes, utensils and cookware
- Cleans iron and ironing board and replaces cover as necessary
- Cleans and ensures proper functionality of luggage racks and ensures appropriate hangers in closets
- Ensures TVs, alarm clocks, and in-room phones are clean, programmed and functional
- Places proper number of amenities in room
- Removes and replaces bed linen
- Inspects mattresses and pull-out sofas
- Greets and welcomes guests maintaining outstanding guest relations
- Ensures privacy and security of guests
- Cleans, vacuums and mops corridors, stairways, guest laundry, patios and balconies
- Performs scheduled carpet cleaning including shampooing and spot treatment
- Maintains cleanliness and order of storage rooms
- Communicates status of cleaned rooms and spaces to supervisor
- Accomplishes minor repairs and maintenance of equipment and reports major repairs
- Cleans and inspects exterior spaces such as parking lots and outside passageways
- Loads and unloads supplies from trucks and assists with delivery
- Responsible for pass key and returns keys at shift end
- Reports unusual circumstances immediately to supervisor
- Reports lost and found items listing room or area where found
- Sets up and breaks down complimentary self-service breakfast bar
- Prepares, heats, displays and replenishes breakfast items
- Completes all required safety and security training
- Maintains clean and safe environment applying blood-borne pathogens safety measures
- Performs laundry operations
- May travel to other lodging facilities requiring valid state driver’s license
- May obtain NHG housekeeping certification within 6 months of hire
- Performs other related duties as assigned
