Job Description

The Naval Station San Diego, commonly known as NAVSTA San Diego, is a critical operational base for the United States Navy. Serving as the principal homeport of the Pacific Fleet, NAVSTA San Diego plays a vital role in supporting naval operations, readiness, and the welfare of military personnel. This esteemed establishment not only houses a variety of naval vessels but also provides numerous facilities and services designed to enhance the quality of life for active-duty military members, retirees, reservists, and their families. NAVSTA San Diego is part of the broader defense infrastructure that ensures national security and fosters a strong community among Navy personnel.

Employed by NAVSTA San Diego as a federal employee provides the unique opportunity to contribute directly to the support of military service members by ensuring the smooth operation of the Navy Gateway Inn and Suites as well as Navy Lodge properties. These lodging facilities are essential for accommodating Navy personnel and their families, offering a comfortable and secure environment during their stays. The role available is that of a Housekeeper, responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and upkeep of guest rooms, public spaces, and exterior areas within these facilities. The position is part-time with a flexible schedule ranging from zero to 19.5 hours weekly, making it ideal for individuals seeking adaptable working hours.

The offered pay range for this position is between $18.66 and $19.44 per hour, depending on the candidate's experience. No prior experience is required to apply, and while a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred, individuals with the right attitude and willingness to learn will find this role accessible. This is an excellent entry-level federal employment opportunity that supports the mission of the Navy by providing customers with quality goods and services, contributing to quality of life programs for military families.

As a Housekeeper at NAVSTA San Diego, you will perform a comprehensive range of housekeeping duties that encompass cleaning guest rooms, interior public spaces, and exterior areas, including storage rooms and laundry facilities. The scope of work involves using both hand and powered cleaning equipment to vacuum, mop, dust, scrub, wash, polish, and remove debris. Daily tasks include changing bed linens, cleaning and disinfecting bathrooms and kitchens, washing windows inside and out, shampooing carpets, and maintaining laundry operations. The role demands moderate physical effort, such as moving furniture and operating various cleaning machines.

Beyond routine cleaning, this position requires attention to detail, as housekeepers ensure the functionality and cleanliness of various in-room amenities including TVs, alarm clocks, phones, and luggage racks. Housekeepers are also responsible for ensuring guest privacy and security, greeting guests warmly to maintain positive relations, and communicating effectively with supervisors regarding room status and any notable occurrences. The role may also involve minor maintenance repairs on cleaning equipment and adhering strictly to safety protocols, including handling linens potentially contaminated with blood-borne pathogens.

Employees in this role may be required to assist with logistical tasks such as unloading supplies, preparing and maintaining the self-service breakfast bar, and sometimes traveling between lodging facilities with a valid state driver’s license. Certification in housekeeping and food handling may be required or attained within six months of employment, supporting professional development and adherence to Navy hospitality standards.

Working for the NEXCOM Enterprise at NAVSTA San Diego comes with numerous benefits, including tax-free shopping privileges, free bus passes, free parking, discounted tickets at morale, welfare, and recreation (MWR) facilities, and access to Navy Lodge hotels worldwide. This job offers not just a paycheck but a chance to be part of a valued community that supports the U.S. Navy’s mission and its people, all while enjoying a flexible schedule and excellent working conditions.
