Job Description
Kaiser Permanente is one of the nation's leading healthcare providers and not-for-profit health plans, dedicated to delivering high-quality, affordable health care services and improving the health of their members and communities. Known for their integrated care approach, Kaiser Permanente operates hospitals, medical centers, and outpatient facilities across the United States, including the Downey Medical Center located in California. The organization prides itself on creating respectful, inclusive, and supportive working environments that adhere to strict ethical standards and compliance guidelines. This commitment ensures employees thrive in roles that contribute meaningfully to patient care and facility operations.
This particular role is a Facilities Environmental Services position based at the Downey Medical Center. It is an on-call, evening shift opportunity ideal for individuals who are committed to maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment within a healthcare setting. The working hours for this position run from 4:00 PM to 12:30 AM, seven days a week, but as an on-call job, the exact days and hours can vary. This role is classified as entry level within the organization's Facility Services and Materials Management category, requiring occasional coordination with other hospital departments and strict adherence to Kaiser Permanente's policies and applicable laws at the federal, state, and local levels.
The Environmental Services team plays a vital role in supporting the overall healthcare delivery by ensuring that patient areas, surgical rooms, and other medical environments are immaculately clean and free of contaminants. This includes tasks such as cleaning and sanitizing rooms, mattresses, vents, bathrooms, and equipment, handling biohazardous waste according to established protocols, and using specialized electrical cleaning equipment. The role demands physical stamina due to the moderate to heavy lifting requirements and involves some independent decision-making under general supervision.
Notably, this position emphasizes ethical conduct, confidentiality, and compliance, which are critical in a healthcare environment. The chosen candidate will be entrusted with safeguarding patient and employee confidentiality, protecting organization assets, and consistently demonstrating integrity in their work. While no formal education or prior experience is mandatory, having experience in environmental services within an acute care or medical center setting and a high school diploma or GED is preferred. Communication skills in English and the ability to follow directions accurately are essential, ensuring safety and efficiency in the execution of duties.
Kaiser Permanente's commitment to equal opportunity is reflected in this role, welcoming applications from all qualified individuals regardless of background or any protected characteristic. This position also aligns with the Los Angeles County Fair Chance Ordinance which governs how criminal history may impact employment, underscoring the organization's dedication to fair hiring practices.
In summary, this Environmental Services role at Kaiser Permanente's Downey Medical Center offers a meaningful chance to contribute to the healthcare system by maintaining hospital cleanliness and safety standards. It is suited for individuals who value ethical work, enjoy hands-on cleaning responsibilities in a healthcare setting, and who seek flexible, on-call employment that supports patient care indirectly but significantly.
