Job Description

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center located in Newington, Connecticut, is a vital institution dedicated to providing exceptional healthcare services to veterans and their families. As part of its Environmental Management Services Division, the center operates with a strong commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment that supports comprehensive medical care. The VA Medical Center is a cornerstone of veteran healthcare in the region, emphasizing quality, dedication, and respect for those who have served the nation. \n\nThe Housekeeping Aid (HKA) / Environmental Services (EVS) Technician plays a critical role within this healthcare setting. This permanent, full-time position offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to the health and well-being of veterans through meticulous cleaning and maintenance of VA facilities. Scheduled Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., with initial training during the first four days on the first shift at the West Haven location, this role blends stability with meaningful impact. The compensation ranges from $19.16 to $22.34 per hour under the WG-2 pay scale, reflecting the importance and professional expectations of the position. \n\nHousekeeping Aids are essential to the patient care experience at the VA. The role encompasses a diverse set of responsibilities, including light and heavy cleaning duties, routine housekeeping, and environmental services that ensure a sanitary, safe, and pleasant atmosphere in patient care areas and public spaces. The technician’s efforts support not only patient comfort and safety but also infection control, making them indispensable members of the healthcare team. A significant percentage of the housekeeping staff are veterans themselves, which fosters a supportive community grounded in shared values and experiences. \n\nKey responsibilities include cleaning wards, patient rooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, showers, and other facilities, using various manual and machine-based cleaning methods. The role demands physical stamina, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality, as tasks range from mopping and vacuuming to waste management and inventory control of cleaning supplies. Other functions include making beds, changing linens, dusting furniture, cleaning kitchens, and completing thorough sanitation of both patient and common areas. This position requires the use of specialized powered equipment and adherence to safety protocols to handle potentially hazardous materials and maintain high cleanliness standards. \n\nWorking conditions involve primarily indoor environments with adequate lighting, ventilation, and temperature control, although occasional outdoor work may be required. Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used consistently to mitigate exposure risks to contagious diseases or hazardous substances encountered in a healthcare setting. The role also mandates drug testing, background investigations, and compliance with federal employment rules such as Selective Service registration and completion of a probationary period. \n\nApplicants are expected to demonstrate various competencies including dexterity, reliability, safety awareness, and the ability to follow directions precisely. Experience and training related to housekeeping or environmental services, whether paid or volunteer, are valuable. Educational requirements are flexible as no formal education qualification is mandated, making the position accessible to a broad range of candidates committed to public service and community health. \n\nThis opportunity is represented by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and is filled through Direct-Hire Authority to expedite recruitment of qualified individuals. The application process is thorough and requires submission of a resume and specific documentation. Being part of VA means receiving a comprehensive benefits package including healthcare and retirement options and contributing meaningfully to veterans’ health and safety in a respected federal environment.
