Job Description

The West Haven VA Medical Center, part of the VA Healthcare System, is a renowned healthcare establishment dedicated to delivering compassionate and comprehensive care to veterans and their families. Located in West Haven, Connecticut, this medical center provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services tailored to meet the unique needs of the veteran community. As a leading federal facility, it is committed not only to clinical excellence but also to maintaining a safe, clean, and healthful environment for patients, visitors, and staff alike. The Environmental Management Services Division at the West Haven VA Medical Center plays a crucial role in this commitment by overseeing the custodial and housekeeping operations that ensure pristine facility conditions. The division employs dedicated professionals who contribute directly to the overall patient care experience by sustaining high standards of cleanliness and sanitation across the medical center’s diverse areas.

This job opening is for the position of Housekeeping Aid/Environmental Service (EVS) Technician Leader, a significant role within the Environmental Management Services Division at the West Haven VA Medical Center. This career opportunity offers full-time permanent employment with work schedules available Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. or Thursday through Monday from 11:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. The pay range for this position is between $21.77 and $25.34 per hour, reflecting the WL 2 pay scale.

As an EVS Technician Leader, incumbents perform a comprehensive range of janitorial and custodial tasks, ensuring that all patient care areas and facility units are maintained in a clean, safe, and orderly condition. In this working leader capacity, the technician leads a team of three or more housekeeping aides, coordinating daily assignments and ensuring timely completion of tasks. This leadership role involves direct supervision under the Housekeeping Supervisor or a designated authority, requiring strong communication skills to relay instructions and validate work quality. Duties include promptly addressing spills, managing trash disposal, routine cleaning such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and polishing floors, as well as maintaining lighting by installing bulbs and performing other general maintenance duties.

The position demands proficiency in cleaning patient rooms, wards, corridors, restrooms, offices, storerooms, and other facility areas. The EVS Technician Leader also trains employees in the proper use and maintenance of cleaning tools, supplies, and equipment, all while adhering to established Environmental Management Services and VA Medical Center policies and protocols. Beyond routine cleaning, the leader liaises and coordinates with nursing staff and other supervisors to ensure projects and special tasks are completed efficiently and meet operational standards.

Physical requirements for this role include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, perform tasks involving bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, standing, and walking for significant portions of the work shift. Good hearing, visual acuity, and manual dexterity are essential to operate cleaning equipment and communication devices effectively. The position is part of the AFGE bargaining unit and is subject to a 1-year probationary period to evaluate fitness and performance in alignment with public interest and agency goals.

This role represents an excellent career path for those who take pride in contributing to healthcare excellence through environmental services and who are motivated to lead others in delivering top-quality custodial care. Working at the West Haven VA Medical Center means joining a dedicated team that supports veterans and honors their service by maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and hospitality in a federal healthcare environment.
