The role of Environmental Services Department (E.S.D.) Worker is crucial in maintaining the hospital's environment to the highest standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and safety. The E.S.D. Job Requirements
- at least one to three months of on the job training plus formal classroom training
- basic knowledge of cleaning procedures and equipment use
- physical ability for continuous walking, standing, lifting, carrying, climbing ladders, and operating cleaning machinery
- willingness to work day shifts and follow hospital policies
- effective communication skills in English
- adherence to safety and environmental department policies
- ability to handle exposure to unpleasant odors and potentially hazardous materials
- no driving required
- union membership in the International Brotherhood Teamsters

Job Duties
- perform heavy cleaning duties to maintain hospital cleanliness and order
- shampoo carpets, upholstery, and refinish floors using E.S.D. procedures and equipment
- dust and clean high vents, lights, pipes, lockers, ceilings, and windows using safety devices
- clean miscellaneous items such as wastebaskets, television sets, and rubber mats
- wash and disinfect hospital lavatories including sinks, toilets, urinals, and showers
- service and refill soap and paper dispensers
- prepare burn and radiation rooms with protective coverings
- clean and disinfect beds, mattresses, and sleeping carts
- pick up and dispose of rubbish and soiled linen appropriately
- operate rubbish disposal equipment and clean rubbish areas
- polish walls, woodwork, furniture, and hardware
- transport animal waste, linens, mattresses, and furniture
- clear dirt, snow, and salt from hospital entrances and sidewalks
- change cubicle curtains and wash window blinds with repairs
- clean construction areas post-renovation
- assist in supply rooms and with equipment maintenance
- set up conference rooms for events
- perform housekeeping and laundry aide duties as needed
- comply with safety and environmental protocols
