Job Description
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, is a distinguished federal agency dedicated to providing exceptional healthcare services to Veterans and their families. The Environmental Management Services (EMS) department plays a vital role within the Medical Center, focusing on maintaining a safe, clean, and healthy environment conducive to patient care and staff productivity. As a federally operated entity, the VA is committed to upholding the values of integrity, service, and excellence in fulfilling its mission to serve those who have served our country. This position is a full-time, permanent supervisory role with a competitive salary range of $27.90 to $32.54 per hour, corresponding to the WS-2 pay scale without promotion potential beyond this grade. Working shifts include day, evening, and night to accommodate the 24/7 operations of the Medical Center.
The role of Housekeeping Aid Supervisor within EMS is crucial in ensuring that the VA facilities maintain the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and efficiency. This leadership position involves technical and administrative supervision of housekeeping aids and environmental services technicians who are responsible for the environmental care tasks across the Medical Center. The Housekeeping Aid Supervisor oversees the execution of cleaning duties in various critical areas such as patient rooms, corridors, operating rooms, and other designated spaces. The job demands the ability to plan, coordinate, and monitor work schedules effectively to ensure timely completion of tasks without disrupting patient care or other hospital activities.
A key responsibility of the supervisor includes training staff members on proper cleaning techniques, safety protocols, and customer service principles aligned with patient-centered care. Supervisory functions extend to evaluating employee performance, approving leave requests, counseling, and recommending disciplinary actions when necessary. This position also involves close coordination with other hospital services during remodeling, painting, or office relocations to maintain smooth operations. The role requires physical stamina, including continuous walking, standing, stooping, and handling powered cleaning equipment, reflecting the hands-on nature of the job.
Importantly, this position is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, and those who owe allegiance to the U.S. It is filled using Direct-Hire Authority, ensuring streamlined recruitment. Candidates must pass a background investigation, drug testing, and meet specific employment eligibility criteria. Additionally, the role requires adherence to the Department of Veterans Affairs' policies, including participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program and a standard one-year probationary period to assess suitability and performance. Detailed documentation such as resumes, performance appraisals, and other relevant certifications must accompany the application.
Overall, the Housekeeping Aid Supervisor role at the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City offers a meaningful career opportunity for individuals passionate about contributing to the well-being of Veterans by maintaining a clean and safe healthcare environment. This role is ideal for those with supervisory experience in custodial services, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to public service. Candidates will be part of a dedicated team that values respect, diversity, and the meaningful impact of their work on Veterans’ health and recovery.
