Job Description

The Housekeeping Aid Supervisor position is located within the Environmental Management Services (EMS) department at the Central Alabama VA Medical Center, which serves Montgomery and Tuskegee, Alabama. The Central Alabama VA Medical Center is a federal healthcare facility dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate care to veterans and their families. EMS plays a critical role in the medical center by ensuring a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment that supports high-quality patient care and operational efficiency. This department encompasses a variety of environmental and support services including sanitation, waste removal, textile distribution, and staff training.

This federal position offers a permanent, full-time appointment under the competitive service with a pay scale grade of WS 2, earning between $26.36 and $30.75 per hour. The supervisory role comes with no promotion potential but enables the incumbent to directly influence the quality of the medical center’s sanitation practices and support the overall mission of the facility. Work schedules vary with shifts such as 11 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. or 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and include rotating weekends and holidays. The position is not telework eligible and requires occasional coordination with other services within the medical center.

As a Housekeeping Aid Supervisor, the incumbent exercises both technical and administrative supervision over subordinate workers. This includes assigning and scheduling work for routine and non-routine cleaning duties across patient areas, corridors, operating rooms, and other facility spaces. The role demands adept coordination to prevent disruptions to patient care and other clinical activities, making it essential to plan and reorganize work schedules efficiently. The supervisor ensures that sanitation standards meet regulatory requirements and monitors the use, availability, and maintenance of equipment and supplies aimed at cost control. Training and development of staff form a core responsibility, emphasizing patient-centered care principles to maintain service quality and safety. The incumbent also addresses staff performance, counsels employees, manages leave approvals, and initiates disciplinary actions as needed.

The supervisor serves as a key liaison, coordinating cleaning operations during renovation projects such as remodeling, painting, or office relocations to ensure seamless transitions. Regular inspections are conducted to verify that cleaning duties are performed expediently and that sanitation objectives are achieved consistently. The role requires familiarity with safety regulations, and the supervisor may be tasked with conducting safety training to uphold compliance. Additionally, the supervisor oversees textile and uniform distribution ensuring accurate recordkeeping.

This position requires a commitment to federal employment eligibility including U.S. citizenship, successful background investigations, and compliance with federal policies such as drug screening and selective service registration. A probationary period of one year applies during which the employee’s fitness and performance are closely evaluated. Veterans, displaced federal employees, and members of the public are encouraged to apply. Although there is no formal education requirement, applicants must demonstrate related work experience or training with the skills necessary for the job, supported by detailed resumes.

Overall, the Housekeeping Aid Supervisor plays a pivotal role in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe environment essential for the comfort and well-being of veterans receiving care. Through effective leadership, scheduling, training, and quality assurance protocols, this role supports the medical center’s mission to provide outstanding health care services while fostering a supportive workplace culture. This federal career offers a stable and meaningful opportunity to serve veterans in a large medical setting with comprehensive benefits and competitive compensation.
