Job Description

The Ralph H Johnson Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, located in Charleston, SC, is a vital part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare services to our nation's veterans. As a federal healthcare institution, it offers an array of medical services, ensuring high-quality patient care in a supportive environment. The Medical Center is committed to promoting the health and well-being of veterans by employing skilled professionals who contribute passionately to this mission. The center embraces diversity, inclusion, and excellence in service, and it is known for its dedication to veterans and the community it serves.

The Environmental Services Technician Leader (Housekeeping Aid Leader) role at the Ralph H Johnson VA Medical Center is an essential leadership position within the Environmental Management Service Line. This full-time, permanent position offers an hourly wage ranging from $20.56 to $23.98 and carries a promotion potential to grade 2 with the WL pay scale. The Technician Leader supervises a team of ten or more Environmental Services Technicians (Housekeeping Aids) in performing both general and specialized housekeeping duties. These duties include linen distribution, waste management, pest management, and oversight of the Bed Management System (BMS). Candidates in this role work closely with the Housekeeping Aid Supervisor and ensure that all cleanliness and safety standards are met throughout the medical center. The work schedule is primarily from 3:00 pm to 11:30 pm, Sunday through Saturday on a rotating basis, with various holidays and weekends off, subject to change based on agency needs.

This leadership position demands strong organizational and communication skills to effectively delegate daily tasks, coordinate with supervisory staff across services, and plan the allocation of resources, personnel, and equipment. The Environmental Services Technician Leader trains staff in customer service principles aimed at enhancing patient-centered care and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The incumbent will also inspect work sites to guarantee sanitation levels and maintain equipment properly. Physical requirements include frequent standing, bending, stooping, and lifting up to 50 pounds, with occasional handling of heavy equipment and working on ladders. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and safety within patient care areas, operating rooms, and administrative spaces, which directly impacts the overall quality of healthcare delivery.

Candidates applying for this role should be U.S. citizens or nationals, suitable for federal employment, and willing to complete mandatory background checks and onboarding processes. The position requires commitment to upholding the principles of the U.S. Constitution and contributing toward increasing government operational efficiency. Working at the VA provides comprehensive federal benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and professional development opportunities. The job also offers a meaningful chance to support veterans by maintaining a clean and safe healthcare environment, making it an excellent choice for those passionate about public service and leadership in environmental services within the healthcare industry.
