Job Description

The Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Montgomery, Alabama, is a vital federal healthcare institution dedicated to serving the diverse needs of veterans across the region. As part of the U.S. government, this Medical Center operates under the mission to provide outstanding medical care, promote veterans' health, and advance medical research. The facility supports a wide variety of healthcare services, including inpatient and outpatient treatment, surgical care, and specialized medical programs, all designed to enhance the quality of life for veterans. With a commitment to excellence, the Medical Center incorporates advanced medical technologies, highly skilled professionals, and compassionate patient-centered care to fulfill its objectives.

Environmental Management Services (EMS) is an essential department within this VA Medical Center, responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and hygienic environment throughout the facility. EMS supports the hospital's broad mission by ensuring that all areas comply with regulatory health and safety standards, which includes maintaining sterile environments in operating rooms, treatment areas, patient wards, and public spaces. The dedication to environmental stewardship and infection control is critical not only for the well-being of patients but also for the safety of staff and visitors.

The Housekeeping Aid (Leader) position within EMS plays a pivotal role in supporting the department’s goals and objectives. Additionally, the Housekeeping Aid (Leader) assists in coordinating team activities, including delegating tasks and supporting planning efforts as required by the supervisor to maintain seamless operations.

This position is physically demanding and requires the ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds), operate and maintain cleaning equipment, and possess the mobility to work in various hospital settings including operating rooms, wards, and outpatient areas. Candidates are expected to follow strict aseptic and aesthetic techniques to maintain a pleasing and sanitary environment for all stakeholders. The working conditions also include wearing personal protective equipment and occasional exposure to strong cleaning chemicals, bodily fluids, and communicable diseases, underscoring the importance of strict adherence to safety protocols.

The Housekeeping Aid (Leader) works Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM with rotating weekends and holidays as needed. This schedule reflects the Medical Center’s commitment to maintaining a superior standard of cleanliness consistently throughout the facility. The wage range offered for this vital role is $16.06 to $18.75 per hour, based on the WL 2 pay scale and grade system. The position is represented by a union and involves a probationary period to ensure suitability and assess continued employment benefits.

Overall, this opportunity offers a rewarding career path for individuals passionate about contributing to healthcare through environmental services. Working in a federal institution like the VA Medical Center ensures comprehensive benefits, job security, and the chance to make a meaningful impact on the health and safety of America’s veterans. It is a role for candidates dedicated to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and operational efficiency while supporting healthcare teams in a dynamic and diverse medical environment.
