Job Description

The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System, part of the Department of Veterans Affairs, is a leading healthcare establishment committed to providing exceptional medical services and care to Veterans in the Sioux Falls, South Dakota area. This healthcare system operates within the VA Midwest Health Care Network, which emphasizes a Whole Health System of care that empowers Veterans to take charge of their own health and well-being through personalized health plans embedded in healing relationships and supportive environments. Recognized for its dedication to honoring America’s Veterans, the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System delivers comprehensive services across various medical specialties to ensure quality care and improved health outcomes for Veterans and their families.

This particular position is located within the Environmental Management Services department, focusing on maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment for both patient and non-patient care areas within the facility. The role is classified as a Housekeeping Aid - Environmental Services Technician (PD99909S) and is a full-time, permanent appointment with a wage scale of WG 2, offering an hourly salary ranging from $17.78 to $20.75. The work schedule is structured with options including shifts from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Wednesday through Sunday or evening shifts Monday through Friday, incorporating rotating federal holidays. This schedule supports the continuous maintenance required for a healthcare environment and promotes work-life balance with designated days off.

The Environmental Services Technician plays a vital role in executing a broad range of janitorial and custodial tasks that ensure the facility meets strict cleanliness and sanitation standards mandated in healthcare settings. Responsibilities include textile distribution and inventory management, sanitizing and disinfecting surfaces to control infection, waste removal including medical waste, window washing, floor polishing, and maintaining patient care refrigerators and ice machines. The position requires proficiency in using heavy-duty cleaning equipment like industrial buffers and pressure washers and performing minor maintenance on these tools to maximize their effectiveness.

Moreover, this role involves meticulous attention to cleaning patient rooms, restrooms, and common areas, replenishing supplies such as paper towels and soap, and managing soiled and clean textiles in coordination with ward operations. The technician must also handle safety-sensitive materials such as needle boxes and clean reusable medical equipment, ensuring adherence to safety protocols. In addition to physical tasks, there is an element of teamwork, as the technician may oversee and provide guidance to Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) workers. The position emphasizes physical stamina, dexterity, and concentration, given the demands of operating powered cleaning machinery and navigating varied cleaning environments, including potentially exposed outdoor areas under extreme weather conditions.

This employment opportunity is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or individuals who owe allegiance to the U.S., and utilizes Direct-Hire Authority to streamline recruitment in this critical occupational field. Applicants will undergo a 1-year probationary period to assess performance and alignment with organizational goals. Protective equipment and adherence to occupational safety standards are compulsory due to inherent risks such as exposure to contagious diseases and the use of powerful cleaning equipment. Additionally, employees must participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program, aligning with health care personnel safety requirements.

The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System values reliability, safety, and a commitment to public service, seeking candidates who are passionate about contributing to the efficiency of federal government healthcare operations while honoring and serving Veterans. Benefits of federal employment include a comprehensive package designed to support employees and their families, encompassing health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and more, providing a rewarding and secure career path. This position is based in Sioux Falls, SD, and requires no travel or relocation expenses. Telework options are not eligible for this role, reinforcing its onsite service nature in critical healthcare facility operations.
