Job Description

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center located at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI, is a dedicated federal healthcare establishment committed to providing top-quality services to Veterans and their families. This institution is a critical component of the VA's healthcare system, delivering comprehensive medical care, support, and environmental management services that enhance the health and well-being of Veterans. The Maintenance and Environmental Management Services Division plays a vital role in ensuring that the hospital environment is safe, clean, and supportive of the healing and recovery process. This high standard of maintenance not only reflects the VA's commitment to Veterans but also complies with health and safety regulations and operational efficiency protocols expected of federal agencies.

This open, permanent, and full-time Housekeeping Aid position is based at the Madison VA Medical Center. The role is instrumental in maintaining sanitation and cleanliness across the hospital facilities, contributing directly to patient care quality and safety. The work schedule includes 2nd and 3rd shifts, Monday through Friday and Sunday through Thursday, respectively. Compensation ranges from $19.59 to $22.84 per hour under the WG-2 pay scale, with no promotion potential mentioned for this grade.

As a Housekeeping Aid, responsibilities include performing both light and heavy janitorial and custodial duties within patient areas and common spaces. This includes cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, patient rooms, hallways, and other surfaces using appropriate chemical agents that ensure cleanliness without compromising patient health. You will manage waste disposal, replace lighting elements such as bulbs, vacuum, polish floors, and operate powered cleaning machinery like buffers and industrial vacuum cleaners. The role demands high physicality—standing, walking, lifting, and operating equipment for extended periods—and requires considerable hand-eye-foot coordination, dexterity, and visual acuity to detect dirt and maintain high cleanliness standards.

Veterans comprise a significant portion of the housekeeping staff, highlighting the supportive and veteran-centric culture within the department. The position emphasizes safety, reliability, and dependability with detailed procedures for handling soiled linen and contaminated materials safely and effectively.

This role offers federal employment benefits that are comprehensive and designed to support employee well-being and work-life balance. Federal employees enjoy access to health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plans, paid leave, and other perks that enrich their career experience. The VA encourages candidates who are passionate about serving the Veteran community and improving federal government efficiency to apply.

Overall, joining the VA Medical Center as a Housekeeping Aid means becoming a vital part of a respected federal healthcare system dedicated to America’s Veterans, ensuring their healthcare environment is clean, safe, and conducive to healing. It offers a unique opportunity to contribute to public service, with a position that values teamwork, responsibility, and dedication to the highest standards of environmental maintenance and customer service.
