Job Description

The Long Term Care (LTC) Charles S. Kettles VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is a prominent healthcare facility dedicated to providing quality medical services to Veterans and their families. As part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, this medical center specializes in offering comprehensive care while emphasizing the dignity and respect owed to those who have served our country. The Environmental Management Services Division within this facility plays a pivotal role in maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and sanitation across all patient and non-patient care areas. This division ensures that the environment supports optimal healthcare delivery by adhering to strict infection control and housekeeping protocols designed to safeguard the health of patients, staff, and visitors.

The Housekeeping Aid position at the LTC Charles S. Kettles VA Medical Center is a full-time, permanent role that operates under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or their designee. This role offers a wages range typically between $23.80 and $27.77 per hour, classified under the WG 2 pay scale with no promotion potential. The position requires the performance of various janitorial and custodial services that are vital to the daily operation and cleanliness of the medical facility. As part of the Environmental Management Services Division, the Housekeeping Aid is entrusted with ensuring that the facility’s environment is safe, sanitary, and comfortable for Veterans receiving care and the employees who support them.

Primary responsibilities involve executing a full range of housekeeping activities in diverse areas of the medical center, including patient rooms, restrooms, hallways, stairwells, and common areas. Duties include routine floor maintenance such as sweeping, dust mopping, wet mopping, scrubbing, stripping, refinishing, buffing, and vacuuming carpets and runners, as well as spot cleaning surfaces. The Housekeeping Aid also manages wall washing, cleaning doors and doorframes, baseboards, and corners. High and low dusting tasks are performed regularly, along with the use of heavy industrial-powered and battery-operated equipment, such as floor scrubbers and buffers. The position requires minor maintenance and cleaning of cleaning equipment and proper attachment changes to ensure effective cleaning results.

The role also involves the collection and transportation of general refuse, regulated medical waste, and recyclable materials to designated central collection areas. The Housekeeping Aid maintains cleanliness in restrooms, bathrooms, and shower rooms by cleaning, disinfecting, and deodorizing toilets, sinks, mirrors, light fixtures, and water fountains. They are also responsible for replenishing supplies like paper towels, toilet paper, hand sanitizers, and soap where dispensers are located throughout the facility.

The work schedule for this role is generally established between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., but assignments can vary and may include working different tours or designated areas to accommodate the medical center's operational needs. The position demands physical stamina, including continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, and the occasional handling of heavy cleaning equipment weighing over 50 pounds. Due to the nature of the healthcare environment, workers must adhere to infection control practices, use personal protective equipment, and manage biohazardous materials safely.

This position is open to U.S. citizens and requires meeting federal employment standards, including background investigations and probationary evaluations. The VA offers a robust federal benefits package, making this a rewarding career opportunity for those committed to public service and impactful healthcare support roles.
